ADON responsibilities include:

  • Supervising and supporting registered nurses (RNs), licensed practical/medication aide (LPNs/MedAides), and certified nursing assistants (CNAs).
  • Helping manage daily nursing operations, including staffing and scheduling.
  • Ensuring compliance with federal, state, and facility regulations.
  • Assisting with staff hiring, orientation, training, and performance evaluations.
  • Monitoring resident care plans and addressing clinical concerns.
  • Investigating incidents, accidents, and resident complaints.
  • Participating in quality improvement and infection prevention programs.
  • Maintaining accurate medical documentation and ensuring regulatory standards are met.
  • Working with physicians, therapists, social workers, and families to coordinate resident care.
  • Filling in for the Director of Nursing when needed.

Common qualifications

  • Current RN license.
  • Several years of nursing experience, often in long-term care or skilled nursing.
  • Supervisory or leadership experience.
  • Knowledge of long-term care regulations and quality standards.
  • Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.

The ADON is essentially the second-in-command of the nursing department, balancing direct clinical oversight with administrative and leadership duties. The role often involves both office work and hands-on clinical support, depending on the needs of the facility.
