Job Description

DescriptionThe Assistant Grounds Supervisor provides a safe attractive and environmentally compliant outdoor environment for the students and staff on UTCs 140-acre campus. This position requires a 24/7/365 commitment and working in all weather conditions campus events and any campus emergency.ResponsibilitiesSupervises and participates in and provides expertise for the cultivation and maintenance of specialized athletic and recreational turf areas on campus ensuring field conditions are adequate for the safety of participants in athletic events this includes design layout installation operation and maintenance of irrigation systems for fields and campus as well as specialized requirements for baseball facilitiesSupervises assigned crew in horticultural area ensuring proper manning for multiple projects and completion of assigned tasksTrains and advises crew on proper care and maintenance of ornamental plant areas on campusSupervises and participates in the performance of specialized tasks associated with horticultural areas including design planning preparation planting and care of ornamental flower and shrub beds trees and special plant collectionsPrunes and cares for flowers shrubs and trees in accordance with proper principlesOperates and utilizes specialized landscaping equipment in the performance of various landscape tasks especially those related to horticultural activities including the use of tractors loaders sprayers mowers tillers cutters blowers grass trimmers aerifiers and vacuum machinesApplies chemicals and fertilizers to specifications including the use of herbicides fungicides soil fumigants growth retardants and insecticidesStores maintains mixes and applies agricultural and commercial chemicals in conformance with state and federal regulationsCleans and maintains lawns streets walks parking areas etc. especially including removal of snow and ice and salting of walkways during icy periodsThe ideal candidate will possess the following:Must be able to perform supervisory dutiesAbility to obtain a Category 3 pest management certificationPossess strong written and verbal communication skillsExperience with the cultivation and maintenance of specialized athletic turfExperience with the preparation and maintenance of turf grounds requirements of a similar nature with baseball infieldsExperience with planting and pruning techniques for ornamental plant cultivationExperience with operation of required tools mowers backhoe grass trimmers pruners chain saws and edgersExperience in the layout installation operation and maintenance of irrigation systemsReview of applications will beginNovember 4 2025and will continue until the position is received bythis datewill receive priority consideration.QualificationsMinimum Qualifications:Requires a high school diploma and six months of relevant experience in general horticulture tree cultivation maintenance of specialized athletic turf and grounds areas including highly specialized applications such as baseball fields or an equivalent combination of education training and experience.Preferred Qualifications:A Category 3 pesticide certification 3 years experience in grounds development and care of a similar size scope and scale in a higher education setting is preferred.Required Experience:Manager Key Skills Employee Evaluation,Facilities Maintenance,Maximo,Facilities Management,HVAC,Mechanical Knowledge,CMMS,Maintenance Management,OSHA,Maintenance,Cordova,Supervising Experience Employment Type : Full-Time Experience: years Vacancy: 1
