Department InformationBioSci Careers creates a community of mentors to support the academic advancement, professional development, and career-of-choice decisions of our graduates, medical students, and postdoctoral fellows. Job PurposeThis position leads and manages a comprehensive student services program, providing strategic direction for holistic career and professional development initiatives within BioSci Careers. The role is responsible for designing, implementing, and evaluating innovative, evidence-based programming (virtual and in-person); interpreting and enforcing academic and university policies; and overseeing budgets, reporting systems, and technology resources. The position serves as a subject-matter expert and primary advisor to trainees, offering coaching on complex academic, career, and personal development matters while building strong partnerships with faculty, alumni, employers, and professional organizations. The role also drives assessment and continuous improvement through data dashboards, outcome reporting, and longitudinal impact analysis; secures funding through grants and development efforts; and leads and develops staff and peer coaches to deliver high-impact services that strengthen community, expand access, and improve career outcomes. This position will be based on the Stanford campus and will be considered for an option of telecommuting from the Bay Area (hybrid of working 2-3 days on-site), subject to operational need. Core DutiesManage the Outcomes and Development unit, including program creation; analysis of program efficacy; trainee staff and alumni volunteer supervision (and staff supervision as program builds); direct trainee advising and education; and relevant policy and best practices recommendations.Make recommendations for strategic direction of Outcomes and Development unitEngage in critical analysis and evaluation of trainee interests, economic trends, and service efficacy. Use quantitative and/or qualitative methods to explore gaps in offerings, longitudinal career readiness, and service impacts (as defined by: knowledge, competence, confidence, excitement in/about careers of choice)Create relevant online education resources; alumni career data dashboards; and sector-specific career-readiness tracking.Inform, develop, and support new research and programming initiatives to reduce time to degree and time in training.Develop and implement career readiness curriculum (virtual, in-person) in line with NACE recommendations and sector trends, beyond resume/CV workshops.Provide direct advice via 1:1 and peer on peer group sessions to trainees on a broad range of complex issues including, but not limited to, academic progress, academic program policies, career plans, accessibility, community standards, sector trends, and related topics to increase their knowledge, competence, confidence, and excitement in/about Biosciences careers of choiceCreate, develop, and maintain new Sector Fellows program to create 1:1 advising opportunities between alumni and sector VIPs and trainees at different points in their training.Interpret and oversee the implementation of university policies and practices for Biosciences graduate students and postdoctoral trainees, as well as alumni partners.Analyze and develop report requirements, portals, and trainee-facing communications.Evaluate and determine recommendations on technology resources, negotiate with resources options and vendors.Manage outreach programs, relationships with external community, and university liaisons.May contribute to preparing and submitting training grants and assist in development efforts to support donor relations, stewardship annual reporting.Manage financial processes and development of budgets.Oversee key processes, including contribution and direction on policy and program content.Provide consulting advice to internal and external organizations; act as subject matter expert in career outcomes and Biosciences career readiness.May direct the work of other staff; contribute to development of staff training programs.Education & Experience (Required): Bachelor's degree and five years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Required): At least 5–7 years of progressively responsible experience in career services, student development, biotechnology/corporate leadership, academic advising, or a related area.Demonstrated experience with outcomes assessment, focus group practices, program design, and quantitative/qualitative data-driven decision making.Strong advising skills with the ability to support students and postdocs from extensive backgrounds.Supervisory experience with a demonstrated ability to lead and train teams.The willingness and ability to take career readiness education beyond basic resume, interview, and negotiation workshops.Dedication to “feedback as a gift philosophy” and collaborative, “all-hands-on-deck” team environments.Advanced verbal and written communication skills to clearly and effectively present information and represent data to internal and external audiences, client groups, and all levels of management.Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to review and analyze complex information.Advanced computer, technology, and data analysis expertise.Interest in embracing new technologies, accepting change as important to personal, professional, and community growth.Budget development and management acumen.Ability to ensure and apply compliance with legal, financial, and university policies and external regulations. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Required): Advanced communication skills to clearly and effectively communicate information to internal and external audiences, client groups, and all levels of management.Strong analytical and problem solving skills to review and analyze complex information.Advanced computer skills, including experience with Microsoft Office Suite.Advanced customer service skills.Relevant computer systems/technology experience.Understanding of financial transactions.Ability to ensure and apply compliance with legal, financial, and university policies and external regulations. Desired Qualifications:Graduate degree in a biosciences, psychology, business, or related fields; or significant experience advising STEM/biomedical graduate and postdoctoral populations.Familiarity with graduate education structures, postdoctoral training, and the academic research enterprise.Experience working with alumni and employer partners to develop career pipelines.Experience with career/personality assessments, especially MBTI and Strengths; or quality understanding of assessment theory and practice.Familiarity with NACE competencies. Physical Requirements:Frequently sit, perform desk-based computer tasks.Occasionally stand, walk, twist, use fine manipulation, grasp, use a telephone, write by hand, sort and file paperwork, lift, carry, push, and pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds. The expected pay range for this position is $108,450 to $124,080 per annum.
