Job Description

AbbVie is searching for an in-house Associate General Counsel for our Patent Prosecution group part of AbbVies Intellectual Property Transactions and Innovation legal team. This position will support AbbVies aesthetic and pharmaceutical products and will be based at either our North Chicago location or one of our Greater Boston area locations with an optional hybrid work model (on site 3 days/week).Acting individually and in cross-functional teams the in-house Associate General Counsel will help shape AbbVies future by translating legal complexity into strategic opportunity. As an Associate General Counsel the candidate will provide high-level support across business functions and geographies balancing risk with innovation by driving informed decision-making leading cross-functional initiatives and building the readiness required to operate in an evolving global environment. Responsibilities:Advise senior leaders and business partners on complex legal matters and maximize AbbVies competitive position through creation and implementation of intellectual property strategiesProvide legal advice and counsel to cross-functional R&D and business teams on a variety of IP-related mattersDraft file and prosecute strategically useful patent applications worldwide both directly and through management of outside counselChallenge and defend patents in IPR opposition interference and other post-grant proceedingsConduct prior art searches analyze third-party patent positions and conduct due diligence to support business development activitiesQualifications : Requirements: JD degree from an accredited law school state bar admission enabling in-house practice (specific state not required) and registration to practice before the USPTO15 years of experience practicing patent law as an attorney at a law firm and/or life sciences or medical aesthetics company in-house experience working on medical aesthetics products including substantial U.S. and foreign patent prosecution.Experience with India China and emerging markets a plusTechnical background relevant for pharmaceutical and medical aesthetic patent prosecution such as:Experience with small molecule biological pharmaceutical and/or medical aesthetics discovery & development and/orTechnical degree in relevant field such as biomedical engineering biotechnology biochemistry biology chemistry chemical engineering or  molecular biologyStrong legal analytical communication collaboration and people skillsDemonstrated ability to manage complex projects to meet deadlinesAdditional Information : Applicable only to applicants applying to a position in any location with pay disclosure requirements under state or local law: The compensation range described below is the range of possible base pay compensation that the Company believes in good faith it will pay for this role at the time of this posting based on the job grade for this position. Individual compensation paid within this range will depend on many factors including geographic location and we may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range. This range may be modified in the future.
