Attorney at Bay Oak Law
JOB DESCRIPTION
Company Description
Bay Oak Law has been providing comprehensive legal services to individuals, small business owners, entrepreneurs, and startups throughout the San Francisco Bay Area since 1998. Headquartered in Oakland, our firm specializes in resolving legal conflicts involving employees, customers, contractors, and businesses using practical and tailored solutions. We also assist clients in mitigating future risks through well-crafted contracts and policies. Our attorneys are deeply knowledgeable in California business law and experienced with the local court system, ensuring effective representation and resolution of legal matters.
Role Description
Bay Oak Law is seeking seeking an attorney licensed and living in the Bay Area with at least two years of substantive experience to join a practice focused on small business representation regarding intellectual property, employment and labor law, business litigation, and transactional work, as well as legal issues at the intersection of law and artificial intelligence. While some tasks require in-office attendance, flexibility to work remotely is offered for most responsibilities. The ideal candidate will collaborate closely with clients to deliver effective and efficient legal solutions.
This is a hands-on litigation and transactional position with direct client responsibility from day one. You will manage matters independently, work closely with the firm's principal, and have meaningful input into how matters are handled. The caseload is varied and intellectually engaging - no document review warehouses here.
Qualifications
- J.D. from an accredited law school; strong academic record
- Active California Bar membership in good standing
- Admitted to practice in California state courts and relevant federal courts
- Minimum two years of experience in intellectual property, employment, labor, business litigation, or transactional work, preferably with small business clients
- Prior trial experience welcomed.
- Familiarity with AI, data use, or emerging technology legal issues is a meaningful plus
What You'll Do
- Manage a mixed caseload of IP issues, employment disputes, business litigation, and some transactional matters
- Draft and argue motions, pleadings, and discovery
- Prepare, negotiate, and review contracts and transactional documents
- Counsel clients directly and appear at hearings, CMCs, depositions, and trial, both by video and in person
- Conduct legal research and analysis across practice areas
- Handle state and federal court proceedings and administrative matters
What We Offer
- $110,000 - $150,000+/year depending on experience
- Hybrid, but mostly remote work arrangement. Ability to appear throughout Bay Area courts on short (or no) notice required.
- Paid sick leave and vacation, HSA, and decent medical, dental, and vision insurance
- Direct mentorship from and access to the firm's principal
- Real advancement opportunity, including client relationship development and expanded practice responsibility, for attorneys who perform and contribute to firm growth
- A light-hearted environment; we don't take ourselves seriously, but we take the work very seriously
To Apply
Submit a resume, a writing sample of your own work product (no writing by artificial intelligence) and a cover letter describing a matter you handled from inception through resolution - what your role was, what you found challenging, and how it resolved.
