Baker 1 - 9 monthMillersville UniversityDepartment: Dining and Catering ServicesNature of Position: Permanent, Full-timeJob Summary/Basic FunctionAbout the position:This position will perform a variety of specialized baking tasks involving the use of chemical leavening agents in the preparation of such items as cakes, pies, and cookies. Work Includes mixing, proofing, and baking yeast products. The employee may function as a lead worker by assigning routine tasks to food service workers or student help. Individuals from traditionally underrepresented groups are strongly encouraged to apply.Duties and Responsibilities:Measure, weigh, mix, and bake chemically leavened products such as cakes, pies, cookies, brownies, cornbread, biscuits, rolls, dough for pies and cobblers according to standardized recipes. Slice and drop cookies. Ice and glaze cakes, cookies, and sweet rolls.Measure, weigh, mix, divide, proof, retard, mold and shape and bake yeast-leavened products such as bread dinner rolls, doughnuts, and pizza crust according to standardized recipes.Mix fruit and cream fillings.Fill cream puffs, doughnuts, éclairs, and turnovers according to standardized recipes.Operate baking equipment such as scales, mixers, sheeters, proof boxes and ovens.Responsible for directing bake shop activity in the absence of Supervisor 1.Check student dessert line and replenish desserts before leaving for the night.Shut down all equipment and lock all coolers and storage before leaving for the evening.Decorate with various piping tips, such as star tips, leaf tips, rose petal tips and round tips.All other duties as assigned.SAFETYWork safely by using Personal Protective Equipment, maintaining equipment, following safety procedures and policies, etc.Leave the work area clean and functional at the end of shiftBe aware of and report any potential safety hazards to supervisor or management immediatelyCooperate with safety investigations and auditsAttend safety training sessions and maintain licenses, certifications, etc.Required QualificationsDemonstrated knowledge of:Modern methods, materials, practices, and procedures used in quantity baking.Baking safety standards necessary to prevent accidents.Proper care and use of modern baking equipment.Types and qualities of baking ingredients.Proper methods used in storing baked goods.Experience:Preparing ingredients.Baking on a quantity basis.reading and interpreting recipes.performing recipe extensions.operating modern bakery equipment.decorating cakes.Basic math skills for recipe and quantity control.Excellent oral, written, interpersonal communication skills.Commitment to inclusive practices and working with diverse student populations.Successful interview.Successful completion of written and demonstrated practical test (cake decorating).Successful completion of three background checks.Preferred QualificationsAssociate’s degree in pastry/baking.Job DescriptionEssential FunctionsPlease Note: These duties are to be performed with or without an accommodation.
