Applicants must be a High School graduate or possess a G.E.D must be at least 18 years of age and have a valid drivers license.This is a great entry-level position for anyone interested in civil engineering!Job DescriptionGENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:Performs limited but skilled lower-level Civil Engineering Technician work in the field and in the office typically associated with public works projects of relatively smaller size complexity and/or value. Typical projects include street excavations for utilities sanitary sewers storm drainage systems pavement sidewalks curbs drive aprons etc.Performs related work as required such as but not limited to designs reviews inspections measurements documentation and record-keeping correspondence coordination etc.Reviews Ohio Utilities Protection Service (OUPS) requests daily and marks sanitary and storm sewers in the field accordinglyReviews permit applications daily for permits issued by the City Engineering Department and inspects work accordinglyMay occasionally be given work typically associated with higher-level staff for evaluation of potential for promotional opportunitiesSatisfactorily applies engineering and/or technical knowledge principles and techniques to the design and construction of public works projects corresponding to respective level of experience training and job dutiesDISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:Lower-level Civil Engineering Technician positionSome aspects of daily responsibilities are repetitious require schedule coordination with contractors and must be performed on timeSome assignments may be broad in scope with opportunity for the use of independent judgment while others may be specific in scope and directionEXAMPLES OF WORK:As directed conducts preliminary studies costs estimates reviews reports designs and correspondence relative to the respective level of classification expectations for public works and related projects typically associated with City streets sanitary and storm sewers sidewalks curbs driveway aprons and other related featuresInspects relatively smaller projects and work associated with permits issued by the department and writes inspection reports marks up plans for any construction deviations and coordinates with contractorsCoordinates and communicates with management staff daily regarding status of projects and assignmentsUtilizes technology and software as required by the departmentReviews submittals specifications estimates and standards and makes recommendations for revisions and may perform respective revisions as directedReviews plans as directed for compliance with applicable laws regulations standards and specificationsInforms appropriate parties (i.e. supervisors contractors design engineers/architects owners developers) of deviations from plans and specifications on projectsMakes recommendations concerning construction requirements methods and procedures to thesupervisorAssists in surveying and related work as directedServes as skilled draftsman as neededResearches studies and files records as neededReviews permits plats plans and related documents and makes recommendations for approval or denial as appropriateMaintains records in an organized manner and in accordance with department rules and policiesLocates and marks sanitary and storm sewer and manholes lateral connections catch basins and other related sewer features in the field in accordance with standards and requirementsPerforms field investigations as directedConsistently performs correct calculations as needed for reviews and designsUtilizes technology software (i.e. AutoCAD GIS etc.) tools instruments equipment vehicles and gear as directedPrepares work orders for other City staff and departments as appropriate and helps to coordinate work accordinglyAssists with Citys Geographic Information Systems (GIS) as directedProvides assistance as directed on specific projects and corresponding project needsProvides assistance as directed in other department functions and needs such as but not limited to site plan and subdivision reviews pavement program EPA programs and mandates streetscaping permit coordination inventory asset-management record-keeping etc.REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:Demonstrated sufficient technical aptitude for math science trigonometry and related areas as well as critical listening reading and thinking skills as required for the field of Civil Engineering TechnologySupervision is typically received from management staff but the employee is expected to perform routine tasks independently with reference to supervisor only on difficult or unusual problems as they occurAbility to help plan projects and prepare related designs reviews estimates and specifications as directedAbility to assist in reviews of plans as directedPreferred knowledge and experience using AutoCADPreferred knowledge and experience using GISAbility to maintain effective working relationships with othersCommitment to safety at all timesAbility to prepare drawings from field notes and plats of recordAbility to satisfactorily carry out duties and follow complex oral and written instructionsAbility to express oneself clearly and concisely both orally and in writingWillingness to work both in the office and in the field as requiredPhysical ability to work outdoors under adverse conditionsMust pay attention to details be well-organized and accurately follow adopted proceduresMust be familiar with and abide by department rules policies and procedures for office and field workMust be familiar with office records and project locations in the College level courses related to surveying and/or civil engineeringMust pass a technical aptitude test issued by the City of CantonTesting InformationSHOULD TEN OR FEWER QUALIFIED APPLICATIONS BE RECEIVED AN EXAMINATION MAY NOT BE REQUIRED UNLESS TESTING IS NEEDED TO MERGE APPLICANTS ONTO AN EXISTING LIST. NAMES WILL BE PLACED ON AN ELIGIBILITY LIST IN ACCORDANCE WITH THEIR APPLICATION FILING DATE.
