The incumbent provides individualized and group career counseling in both in-person and virtual settings, supporting students in their academic and professional development. Key ResponsibilitiesProvide individual and group career counseling, virtually and in-person, on topics including career exploration, transferable skills, resume preparation, professionalism, and networkingDesign and deliver career development programs and workshops in collaboration with academic departments and employersServe as liaison to assigned colleges and departments, building strong relationships with faculty, student groups, and community partnersFacilitate classroom presentations and outreach activities to promote career readinessDevelop online resources, promotional materials, and tools to support student successSupervise peer ambassadors, interns, or student assistants as needed Knowledge, Skills & AbilitiesSkilled in the development and use of virtual and on-line, distance-learning employment-related tools and resourcesKnowledge of software applications: such as word processing, spreadsheet, power point and database management Demonstrated knowledge of principles of individual and group behavior, career development, and counseling techniquesAbility to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of actionAbility to effectively establish and maintain cooperative working relationshipsPossess excellent customer service and public relations skills and experience in effectively networking with faculty, staff, administrators, and employers strongly desiredAbility to advise students individually or in groups on varied and complex matters; ability to determine the appropriate course of action and proper techniques to utilize while engaged with individuals and groups in personal interactions of a sensitive natureAbility to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of actionThorough knowledge of English grammar, business writing, punctuation, and spellingAbility to present clear and concise information orally and in written reportsAbility to compose and appropriately format correspondence and prepare statistical reportsAbility to develop and coordinate career/employment programs for students while interfacing effectively with faculty, deans and employersAbility to maintain confidentiality and appropriately handle sensitive communications with employees, employers and external agenciesExcellent team work, customer service, and public relations skillsAbility to function successfully in a detail-oriented environment, handle multiple work priorities, and manage projects Required QualificationsEquivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper division or graduate coursework in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution where such are job-relatedThree (3) years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience. A master’s degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling Preferred QualificationsMaster’s Degree in counseling psychology or a related fieldThree (3) years of experience advising or counseling students in a higher education settingExperience with program management, setting basic milestones, identifying resource needs, and team developmentThree (3) years of experience in developing, implementing, and administrating in-person, hybrid, and live programs relevant to career development, counseling, or employmentCertified to administer and interpret career assessments (Strong, MBTI) CompensationClassification: Student Services Professional IIIAnticipated Hiring Range: $5,853/monthCSU Salary Range: $5,540/month - $7,893/month San José State University offers employees a comprehensive benefits package typically worth 30-35% of your base salary.
