JOB DESCRIPTION
Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)
The certified nursing assistant (CNA) will perform the functions of carrying out all assigned work as delegated by the nurse. The CNA will perform his/her job within their scope of practice and is accountable for all patient care given to them during the assigned shift. It is one's responsibility for adhering to all standards of nursing practice, managing supplies and equipment under the direction of the nurse and promoting positive team work with unit staff and other hospital employees. The CNA will adhere to hospital policies including but not limited to confidentiality, sexual harassment, advance directives, and the American Disabilities Act.
Essential job functions include demonstrating clinical proficiency within scope of practice, providing basic personal hygiene needs for patient to include but not limited to: bathing, skin care, oral hygiene, toileting, bed making, and positioning, assisting patient with dietary needs as needed and ordered, obtaining patient vital signs and weights as ordered, using equipment and supplies in a safe and efficient manner, documenting all performed care given by oneself including but not limited to: intake and output, vital signs, ambulation and hygienic care, collection of specimens as ordered according to instructions for collection and as delegated, assisting with patient treatments within the scope of practice, i.e.: enemas, perineal care, application of hot/cold compresses, surgical preps, foley care, application of ace wraps and TED stockings, assisting with assigned patients for examinations, procedures and X-rays, knowledge of the disaster, fire, bomb threat and evacuation plans and your role in the plans as they relate to the unit, performing any other duties as assigned to insure age appropriate quality patient care, attending 75% of unit staff meetings, performing duties in a safe manner, in compliance with all safety policies and procedures, complying with the Code of Conduct and all appropriate codes, policies, and procedures, other duties, as assigned, that are relevant to the position and department, assisting nurses with admission, transfer and discharge of patients following procedures, providing patient comfort measures such as patient privacy, answering call bells promptly, supporting patients and families during hospital stay, following all procedures to ensure patient, family, visitor and employee safety, reporting changes in patient's condition, requests or problems to nurse team leader, maintaining confidentiality of patient information, cleaning utilities, equipment according to procedure and assisting in maintaining unit in an orderly manner, demonstrating practice of infection control policies such as hand-washing, aseptic technique, and universal precautions, acting rapidly and calmly during emergencies and providing necessary materials called for by RN or physician, cooperating and offering help to all personnel, patients and visitors, exhibiting good attendance practices and altering work schedule when need arises; conforming to procedure for reporting illness when necessary, staying available and accessible at all times while on duty, assisting in all hospital units as needed, following unit dress code.
Minimum requirements include current placement as a CNA on the Maine Registry of Certified Nursing Assistants, BLS, hospital experience preferred, excellent communication skills needed, ability to multi-task and take direction well, positive attitude required.
Physical effort and environment includes clinical: frequently lifts up to 50 pounds independently. Occasionally lifts up to 200 pounds with assistance. Frequently pushes/pulls 100 pounds. Visual acuity correctable to 20/20 which is essential for assessing patient condition, reading physician orders and patient records. Color vision essential in assessing patient skin color. Walks, stands, kneels and bends most of the time. Exhibits fine motor skills and manual dexterity necessary to perform the essential job functions of the position. Talking and hearing is essential in dealing with patients, families, and hospital staff.
Exposure risk includes exposure category I: employee at risk for exposure to blood borne pathogens.
Quality improvement includes maintaining current knowledge of the hospital-wide Quality Improvement Program, collaborating with management to improve the effectiveness of the department through the Quality Improvement plans and processes, participating in the departmental and hospital-wide Quality Improvement activities as directed by the manager.
Compliance includes adhering to the federal, state, and local statutes and regulations, adhering to the Compliance Program policies and procedures of Down East Community, adhering to all Privacy and Security policies and procedures of Down East Community, communicating any concern related to compliance issues to Department Director or Compliance Officer, communicating any concern related to confidentiality issues to the Privacy Officer.
