Description / Position OverviewFire Code Inspector IIThe Colorado Springs Fire Department is seeking an energetic positive dynamic and determined individual to join our diverse team of inspectors and engineers within the Technical Services Section of the Division of the Fire Marshal. The Fire Code Inspector II is an exciting position in a fast-paced work environment with avariety of challenges and rewards.In this position you will ensure code compliance with the locally adopted International Fire Code applicable NFPA and other standards to make structures installations and processes safe for the public and occupants. The Technical Services Section primarily deals with hazardous materials high-piled combustible storage and medical marijuana and extraction facilities.***This position is subject to budget required furloughs to be implemented in the 2026 calendar year and any furloughs subsequently approved.***Essential Job Functions- the basic job duties an employee must be able to perform:Perform annual and new construction hazardous material medical gas and hazardous material inspections relating to operational and construction hazardous material permits such as carbon dioxide and other inert gases liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) above and underground fuel storage tanks fireworks pyrotechnics flame effects etc.Inspect properties that store handle and use hazardous materials to ensure compliance with laws codes standards and regulations; ensure other buildings are in accordance with appropriate laws codes ordinances regulations and standards and are equipped with appropriate fire protection and/or suppression equipment including fire extinguishersPerform site analyses to determine the need for hazardous materials permitting; issue hazardous materials and other annual or temporary permits to facilities found incomplianceConduct fire code inspections on new remodeled and existing structures; existing business inspections; and new and existing public school inspections requiring certification from the Colorado Division of Fire SafetyEnsure fire protection systems are inspected and in proper operational statusRecommend actions to bring properties into complianceAccurately and descriptively write and file reportsKeep abreast of current fire safety codes practices and firefighting proceduresPresent and explain fire code requirements and fire prevention information to engineers and construction workersServe order notices and/or summons when fire code violations are not correctedServe on various technical departmental City national and/or community committeesGive educational and informative presentations to City staff the public and other organizations or groupsAssist in the fire code adoption processWe are looking for candidates who demonstrate a strong:Knowledgeand understandingof:Code and standard requirements for the proper handling use and storage of hazardous materialsCurrent fixed ire protection/detection systems technologyInspection principles and practices related to various building techniques safe work practices and proceduresPertinent federal state and local laws codes and regulations including the locally adopted fire code building code mechanical code and related hazardous materials legislationAbility to:Prepare clear and concise reportsLearn to operate a variety of specialized inspection equipmentLearn and understand a variety of specialized processesRead and comprehend construction documents including plans details specifications and calculationsCommunicate clearly and concisely verbally and in writingInteract professionally with members of the community city agencies contractors engineers civic groups and organizationsMinimum QualificationsA high school diploma or GEDTwo years of full-time experience as a Fire Code Inspector I or equivalentPossess or obtain upon hire and maintain a valid non-probationary Colorado drivers license not subject to restriction related to alcohol and/or drug violations or pending chargesCertifications:ICC Fire Inspector II CertificationWithin 12 months of hire dateState of Colorado Inspector IIWithin 12 months of hire dateICC Fire Inspector I Certification or equivalent certification training or experience for ICC FI IUpon HireICS 100Upon HireICS 200Upon HireICS 700Upon HireICS 800Upon HireOne year of relevant work experience may be substituted for one year of required education (OR) one year of relevant academic coursework beyond the minimum requirement may be substituted for one year of required professional experience.Preferred QualificationsSpecialized training in the usage storage and handling of hazardous materialsExperience as a Fire Inspector II or equivalentASSE 6020 Medical Gas certificationAdditional InformationPhysical Demands.The ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally 25 pounds frequently and10 pounds constantly is required.Environmental ConditionsPrimary Work Environment - Office/field environment with travel from site-to-siteExtreme Temperature - SeasonallyWetness and Humidity - Several times per weekRespiratory Hazards - Daily (dust grease smoke fumes and gases)Noise and Vibrations - DailyPhysical Hazards - Daily (emergency site work in a fire-weakened unstable structure)Mechanical and/or Electrical Hazards- ContinuouslyExposure to Communicable Diseases - Rarely Please contact CSFD Human Resources at or for any questions about this position.Equal Opportunity EmployerThe City of Colorado Springs is committed to a culture that values our employees unique individual qualities and fosters an inclusive environment where people want to be.The City of Colorado Springs offers additional compensation depending on the position area of assignment and specific job assignments including shift differential pay differential acting or lead special assignment hazard pay longevity cell phone allowance uniform allowance relocation awards standby call out compensatory time off tuition overtime extra duty incentive holiday premium proficiency and vacation sell back.NOTE: This job announcement is not intended to include a complete listing of all responsibilities knowledge skills and abilities associated with the position.The City does not sponsor applicants for work visas of any kind (including but not limited to F-1 H-1B or TN visas).
