Job Description

Grade/Salary Range: B23 ($23.22 - $28.23/hour) / B24 ($24.94 - $30.31/hour) - Non-exempt * salary commensurate with experience Position Summary: Under the direction of the Chronic Disease Prevention Senior Manager, the Health Education Specialist I/II is responsible for creating, implementing, and supporting health education programs and policies to address the needs of the community at the local and state level. Collaborates with local partnerships to improve healthy outcomes and environments. Responsibilities include but not limited to: Developing policies and strategies for promoting healthy outcomes in the community. Researching, developing, and implementing evidence and population-based interventions which support health promotions, chronic disease prevention, and health equity. Developing and supporting local partnerships to broaden the local response to healthy outcomes and health inequalities. Developing the health awareness of individuals, groups, and organizations, and empowering all to make healthy choices. Leading and supporting multi-agency projects to promote a healthy context and social environment. Developing and advocating for preventative and promotional measures that have a positive impact on the health of individuals and communities. Collecting and analyzing data to improve the health of individuals and the community; Identifying training needs from strategic and local agendas and developing and delivering appropriate training. Conducting public speaking and audio-visual programs for community groups, agencies, and schools. Responsible for compliance with grant requirements by submitting periodic reports, assisting with grant writing, and budget development and planning. Evaluating the effectiveness of educational efforts. Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Health Education, School Health Education, Public Health Education, or Community Health Education HES I: Obtain Certification as a Health Education Specialist (CHES) by the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing (NCHEC) within one year of employment Experience in health promotion strategies and community health education Effective written, oral, and presentation skills Maintain continuing education credits Understands and acknowledges that Public Health - Dayton & Montgomery County uses evidence-based and evidence-informed public health practices based on scientific research including health promotion theory and practice, environmental health measures, and communicable disease control measures including vaccination, isolation, and quarantine practices, and medicine for treatment and prevention of disease, among others Understands and acknowledges the use of tobacco or nicotine products in any form including replacement therapy products and prescription medications used to treat smoking addiction for anyone hired after January 1, 2014, is prohibited Required to play an active role during a public health emergency, crisis, outbreak, incident, or event in which the Health Commissioner deems additional personnel resources are warranted. This may include changes in responsibilities and working locations/hours Completion of Incident Command System 100 and National Incident Management System 700 courses within 90 day Valid State of Ohio driver’s license and insurance on any personal vehicle that will be used for work Preferred Qualifications: Master’s degree in Health Education or School Health Education, Public Health Education, or Community Health Education. Two (2) - three (3) of experience in health promotion strategies and community education. HES II: Health Education Specialist (CHES) Certification by the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing (NCHEC).
