Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
Must be 18 years of age or older
Must possess a high school diploma or GED equivalent
Must successfully complete a physical fitness test and written examination
Must be free of felony convictions
Must have no DUI convictions within the past 24 months
Must have no drug use or possession convictions within the past 60 months
Ability to pass a background check , drug screening , and medical evaluation
Position Summary
The Correctional Officer is responsible for maintaining safety, security, and control within the Ellsworth Correctional Facility. Officers monitor inmate behavior, enforce facility rules, and respond to incidents and emergencies to ensure a safe environment for staff, offenders, and visitors.
Key Responsibilities
Supervise offenders in living quarters, dining areas, classrooms, work sites, and recreational spaces
Monitor offender movement throughout the facility and during off-site escorts
Maintain discipline and control to prevent disturbances or escapes
Conduct inmate counts, pat-downs, and area searches to detect contraband
Observe and document inmate behavior , reporting any deviations or security threats
Enforce facility rules and behavioral management systems fairly and consistently
Respond to emergencies using appropriate contingency plans and intervention techniques
Patrol facility grounds and perimeter areas to ensure security and detect unauthorized activity
Operate emergency and safety equipment including radios, fire extinguishers, and restraints
Administer first aid or CPR when necessary
Counsel and assist offenders to promote compliance and rehabilitation
Record all incidents and reports accurately in required systems (JJIS/JCFS) before end of shift
Preferred Qualifications
Certification as a Corrections Officer by the Kansas Secretary of Corrections (issued upon completion of Basic Training; renewed annually)
CPR and first aid certification (maintained annually)
Prior experience in law enforcement, military, or security operations
Core Skills & Abilities
Strong situational awareness and attention to detail
Excellent communication and observation skills
Ability to remain calm and decisive in high-pressure or emergency situations
Physical ability to stand, walk, climb, and respond quickly to security incidents
Commitment to integrity, professionalism, and teamwork
Proficiency in conflict resolution and de-escalation techniques
