Job Description
Position SummaryThe detention officer provides operational maintenance and security services to the detention facility within the City of Brooklyn Park Police Department. The detention facility operates 24 hours per day 365 days per year.The detention officer works a rotating schedule of 12-hour shifts that will include overnights weekends and holidays. Once training is completed this detention officer will work a rotating schedule of four days on four days off.Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesBook and release arrested persons for Brooklyn Park and other agencies.Book search photograph fingerprint identify and supervise arrested personsAssist with determining bail and release conditions for prisonersMaintain detention center paperwork and records to include booking records court system records and daily activity logs.Maintain jail facility to include:Security of jail property and facilityAccess and egress controlClean areas of detention centerInventory of jail/prisoner suppliesInspectionsMaintain care and custody of prisoners to include:Monitor prisoner activities and maintain disciplinary records as neededFeed shower and otherwise ensure personal hygiene and well-beingMaintain and administer prisoner medicationProvide prisoner recreationSupervise prisoner phone calls and visitsProvide assistance in special circumstances/ emergency situations to include:Physically restrain and discipline prisoners as directedProvide emergency first aid and medical assistance to prisoners and staff as neededMinimum and Desired QualificationsMinimum Qualifications18 years of age or olderHigh school diploma or equivalentUS citizen or lawful resident with INS approval to work in the United StatesThe followingfelony and gross misdemeanor convictions (including pardons and expungements) WILL result in the rejection of a Detention Officer application:Controlled substance convictionCriminal sexual misconduct convictionBias or benefit of a gang related crimeConviction of assaulting fleeing or eluding a police officer firefighter paramedic etc. under 609.50 resulting in a gross misdemeanor conviction in the last 60 months or a misdemeanor conviction in the last 36 monthsEvidence that the applicant has misrepresented or falsified any information to any law enforcement agencyValid unrestricted drivers licenseKnowledge of or familiarity/experience with all relevant policies procedures and general orders pertaining to the operation of the jailAbility to successfully complete and pass physical and psychological examinations and drug testAbility to successfully pass a comprehensive background investigationAbility to work a schedule that includes day evening weekend andholiday hours and shiftsAbility to maintain security and safety of facility staff and prisonersAbility to frequently deal with angry and disturbed peopleAbility to appropriately and calmly respond to disorderly and emergency situationsAbility to maintain orderly conduct enforce rules and regulationsAbility to restrain disorderly prisoners and use appropriate self-defense tacticsAbility to make independent judgments and appropriate decisions to resolve issues/problemsAbility to complete several tasks at once such as using the photo imaging system completing booking paperwork and monitoring a prisonerAbility to organize and prioritize a multitude of duties that must be completed every dayAbility to be detail-oriented to ensure that paperwork and reports are properly completedAbility to professionally exhibit cultural sensitivity patience and understanding in the course of work dutiesAbility to relate to and work with individuals representing a variety of diverse backgrounds and culturesAbility to provide a level of customer service that meets or exceeds customer expectation and satisfactionDesired QualificationsAssociates degree or higherAdditional education/training in complicated criminal and civil laws including rules of criminal procedure arrest and detention procedures and data privacyPrevious experience with the Department of Corrections county or municipal detention facilityPrevious law enforcement/criminal justice experiencePrevious experience with Printrak or similar fingerprint softwarePrevious experience with Picture Link or similar softwarePrevious investigation a psychological exam a medical exam and a drug test.Additional InformationAnticipated Work Schedule:Position is a full-time non-exempt union position that will work a 12-hour shift on a rotating schedule of four (4) days on and four (4) days off.Anticipated Hiring Wage:$34.93-$44.89 per hour depending on qualifications with full-time employee benefit package. This pay range is based on the 2025 contract.
