JOB DESCRIPTION

SUMMARY 
Administers nursing programs in nursing homes to maintain standards of patient care, and advises 
medical staff, department heads, and administrators in matters related to nursing service by performing 
the following duties personally or through subordinate supervisors. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned. 
• Recommends establishment or revision of policies and develops organizational structure and 
standards of performance 
• Interprets policies and objectives of nursing service to staff and community groups 
• Promotes working relationships with community agencies and with other departments 
• Assists in the preparation of departmental budget  
• Performs personnel management functions such as establishing personnel qualification 
requirements, drafting procedure manuals, initiating in-service programs, and installing record 
and reporting systems 
• Initiates studies to evaluate the effectiveness of nursing services about their objectives and 
costs. 
• Assigns responsibility and delegates as appropriate 
• Is subject to on-call status, 24 hours a day, seven days a week 
• Participates in all facility committees, such as QA, Restraint, Infection Control, Safety, etc. 
• Keeps abreast of all changes in the law and regulations as they relate to the nursing operation of 
a facility 
• Works with all department heads in the overall management of the facility. As Nursing is the 
core department responsible for the overall care and well-being of the residents, the Director of 
Nursing has the single most significant resident care position within the organization. 
• Recruits, interviews, selects, and appoints nursing personnel to the facility through the Human 
Resources Department. 
• Defines duties and responsibilities of the nursing staff personnel.  Has full and final responsibility 
for all nursing matters and nursing personnel 
• Directs staff development in-service activity, restorative therapy activity as well as the activity of 
all subordinate supervisors 
• Encourages education through seminars, etc. 
• Participates in all department head meetings, participates in all performance e
valuations of 
Nursing Personnel 
Participates in all disciplinary matters involving Nursing Staff 
• Reviews and signs all incident/accident reports to be forwarded out of the facility 
• Reviews complaints and grievances of families, staff, and residents and participates in the 
resolution 
• Participates in policy and planning development 
• Reviews policies on an annual basis 
• Plans and conducts supervisory meetings and conducts daily checks on all nursing hours 
• Conducts inspections daily and reports findings to the Administrator 
• Performs Primary Care as needed 
• Assures adherence to all safety and sanitation policies and takes corrective actions as necessary 
• Completes all in-service activity as required 
• Maintains resident confidentiality at all times 
• Assists in new employee orientation as necessary. 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES 
Manages subordinate supervisors within the nursing department. Is responsible for the overall direction, 
coordination, and evaluation of these units. Carries out supervisory responsibilities under the 
organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training 
employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining 
employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems. 

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE 
Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) or equivalent; or four to ten years related experience and/or training; or 
equivalent combination of education and experience.   
Point Click Care Software experience, preferred. 

LANGUAGE SKILLS 
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and 
legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory 
agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to write speeches and articles for publication 
that conform to prescribed style and format. Ability to effectively present information to top 
management, public groups, and/or boards of directors. 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS 
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and 
fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, 
percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. 

REASONING ABILITY 
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret 
an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several 
abstract and concrete variables. 
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS 


Must maintain a current valid license as a Registered Nurse in the state of OHIO

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to the risk of electrical shock. 
The employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals. The

weather conditions, extreme cold, and extreme heat. The noise level in the work environment is usually 
moderate.

QUALIFICATIONS / EDUCATION

Must have, at a minimum, an OH-registered nurse license and two years of experience in a supervisory/charge nurse capacity in a hospital or nursing facility.
