Job Description

The Church of the Immaculate Conception located in Towson Maryland seeks a qualified and faithful individual to serve as Director of Sacred Music (DSM). Working in close collaboration with and under the leadership of the Pastor the DSM fosters the glorification of God and the sanctification of the faithful through sacred music and careful liturgical preparation in accordance with the tradition of the Church. This is a full-time ministerial position responsible for developing and maintaining a comprehensive program of sacred music that supports the liturgical and spiritual life of the parish and school. The DSM reports directly to the Pastor regarding performance. The DSM reports to the Director of Parish Operations for benefits budget etc. and collaborates closely with parish staff. The DSM supervises paid and volunteer musicians.Essential FunctionsOversee the planning and execution of all sacred liturgies in collaboration with the Pastor including Sunday Masses Holy Days of Obligation and Special parish liturgies and celebrationsSelect and / or coordinate music for: Sunday 10:00 AM 12:00 PM 5:30 PM Masses and Saturday 5:00 PM Anticipated MassPlan and coordinate music for funerals and weddings; liaise with outside musicians as neededForm and direct an adult choir including weekly rehearsals and directing at least one Mass per Sunday and Holy Day of ObligationForm and direct a school student choir including weekly rehearsals and school MassesRecruit train and schedule liturgical musicians including: Cantors Choir members and InstrumentalistsArrange for substitute or supplemental musicians (e.g. brass strings) for special liturgiesEnsure all liturgical music is well-planned spiritually enriching and executed with excellenceOversee maintenance and tuning of parish musical instruments (organ pianos etc.) 1974 MP Moeller augmented with Rodgers Digital Voices with Antiphonal Speakers.Oversee maintenance of the churchs sound and live-stream systemsMaintain musical library licenses and membership in professional associations. Abide by copyright laws.Manage music ministry budgets and related expenditures.Oversee scheduling and communication with liturgical ministers including: Altar servers Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion Lectors.Oversee sacristy inventoryPosition QualificationsAs a ministerial role a practicing Catholic fully able to participate in the sacramental life of the Church required.Bachelors degree in music or related field strongly preferred.Proficient in organ piano choral conducting and vocal coaching required.Minimum 3 years of experience as a liturgical musician or music director (Catholic parish experience preferred).Strong understanding of Catholic sacred music tradition including Gregorian chant polyphony and appropriate contemporary liturgical music.In-depth knowledge of the Roman Rite including sacramental celebrations and Church documents on liturgical music.Strong pastoral sensitivity and ability to work collaboratively with clergy staff volunteers and parishioners.Proven ability to supervise and direct volunteers and professional musicians of varying skill levels including children.Skilled in recruiting training and coordinating section leaders and other music ministry personnel.Ability to lift and move musical equipment as needed.Requesting a sample video of applicant is requiredPay Range: $70000 - $90000 annualized stipends for funerals and weddingsBase salary compensation will be determined based on factors such as geographic location skills education experience for this role and/or internal equity of our current employees as part of any final offer.
