Dynamometer Technician at Actalent

Job Description
The Dynamometer Technician operates dynamometer and bench test equipment to support testing, validation, and prototype development for commercial vehicle and motorsport applications. This role sets up and runs tests, acquires and analyzes data, troubleshoots issues, and collaborates closely with engineering to deliver accurate, timely test results. The position suits a mechanically inclined professional who enjoys hands-on work with test lab equipment and machine shop tools in a small, family-oriented environment with long-term growth potential.
Responsibilities
- Operate dynamometer and bench test machines to conduct required test procedures in accordance with established protocols.
- Set up test equipment, instrumentation, and data acquisition systems to ensure accurate and reliable measurements.
- Build up test setups and perform complete tear downs after testing is completed.
- Monitor test runs to ensure safety, accuracy, and adherence to all test procedures and standards.
- Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and control system issues that arise during testing activities.
- Support troubleshooting and root cause analysis for test failures or unexpected test results.
- Analyze test data to confirm proper data acquisition and generate final test reports using established templates.
- Maintain inventory of post-tested parts, new test parts, tools, and critical or spare parts for all testing-related machines.
- Collaborate with the engineering team to support development, validation, and problem-solving activities for brake and motorsport applications.
- Operate milling and waterjet machines to support prototype fabrication for motorsport and commercial vehicle projects.
- Assist production teams by performing quality assurance testing on parts when needed.
- Work with minimal supervision, manage multiple priorities, and meet time constraints driven by customer demand.
- Adapt quickly to changing priorities and directions based on company and project needs.
- Keep all work areas clean, organized, and free of hazards in accordance with internal 5S policies.
- Arrive on time and be prepared to work every day, demonstrating reliability and strong work ethic.
- Use handheld measurement gauges and basic production equipment to support testing and inspection tasks.
- Communicate effectively with engineering, production, and other team members to ensure smooth test operations and clear reporting.
- Experience operating dynamometer and bench test equipment, preferably in an automotive or brake testing environment.
- High school diploma or equivalent education.
- Strong mechanical aptitude, including confident use of hand tools and basic mechanical equipment.
- Basic knowledge of vehicle brake systems, including hydraulic and air-actuated brake systems.
- Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite for data entry, reporting, and documentation.
- Ability to use handheld measurement gauges for inspection and verification of parts.
- Ability to operate basic production equipment safely and effectively.
- Good communication skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a team.
- Ability to work with little supervision while managing multiple priorities and meeting time constraints.
- Attention to detail in test setup, data acquisition, and report generation.
- Commitment to maintaining a clean, safe, and organized work area in line with 5S principles.
- Reliable attendance and punctuality, with readiness to work each scheduled day.
- Experience working in a testing environment with dynamometer and bench tests for automotive brakes.
- Knowledge of PROlink software, including DynoView and RevDataPLUS, for data acquisition and analysis.
- Experience operating milling machines and cutting equipment, including waterjet machines, is a plus.
- Basic understanding of operating machine shop equipment used for prototype fabrication.
- Experience supporting motorsport or high-performance vehicle applications is beneficial.
- Strong people skills, with the ability to collaborate closely with engineering and production teams.
- Comfort working in a small, fast-paced environment where priorities can change quickly.
This role is based in a small research and development facility focused on brake pad testing, including press and hardness evaluations. The site has a close-knit, family-oriented culture with approximately 10 people in the facility, offering a collaborative and supportive atmosphere. Work is hands-on and mechanically focused, involving independent mechanical and automotive-related tasks with dynamometer and bench test lab equipment, as well as machine shop tools such as milling and waterjet machines. The technician supports engineering and sales teams by providing prototypes and detailed test results that contribute to both commercial vehicle and motorsport applications. The environment emphasizes safety, cleanliness, and organization through internal 5S policies, and the role reports into the engineering function for original equipment and motorsport projects.
Job Type & Location
This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Troy, MI.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $20.00 - $27.00/hr.
