JOB DESCRIPTION

Engineering Manager, Egregious Abuse Protection

Google's software engineers develop the next-generation technologies that change how billions of users connect, explore, and interact with information and one another. Our products need to handle information at massive scale, and extend well beyond web search. We're looking for engineers who bring fresh ideas from all areas, including information retrieval, distributed computing, large-scale system design, networking and data storage, security, artificial intelligence, natural language processing, UI design and mobile; the list goes on and is growing every day. As a software engineer, you will work on a specific project critical to Google's needs with opportunities to switch teams and projects as you and our fast-paced business grow and evolve. We need our engineers to be versatile, display leadership qualities and be enthusiastic to take on new problems across the full-stack as we continue to push technology forward.

User Protections, part of Core's Privacy, Security, and Safety (PSS) organization, keeps users safe at scale. Within this group, the Egregious Harms Protections team prevents Google's flagship products from being used for the most severe real-world harms, including child exploitation, non-consensual imagery, and violent extremism. We build and deploy end-to-end abuse intervention technologies that protect users both on and off-platform. In this role, you will partner closely with Product, Legal, Policy, and Trust and Safety teams to drive daily, real-world impact. As a team member, you will design and implement advanced abuse-fighting technologies, directly helping to create a safer world by preventing severe harm across Google's ecosystem.

The Core team builds the technical foundation behind Google's flagship products. We are owners and advocates for the underlying design elements, developer platforms, product components, and infrastructure at Google. These are the essential building blocks for excellent, safe, and coherent experiences for our users and drive the pace of innovation for every developer. We look across Google's products to build central solutions, break down technical barriers and strengthen existing systems. As the Core team, we have a mandate and a unique opportunity to impact important technical decisions across the company.

Individual pay is determined by factors including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. US: $207000 - $301000 (USD) + 20% bonus target + equity + benefits

Responsibilities:

  • Manage engineering efforts to protect Google services from Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM) and child endangerment.
  • Develop abuse-fighting technologies using heuristics, machine learning models, and data analysis.
  • Partner with Google product teams to understand and mitigate how abuses manifest across their platforms.
  • Oversee systems that detect and report CSAM instances to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) to facilitate real-world rescues.
  • Build tools that balance user trust and responsible moderation, while empowering external partners and NGOs to fight CSAM.

Google is proud to be an equal opportunity and affirmative action employer. We are committed to building a workforce that is representative of the users we serve, creating a culture of belonging, and providing an equal employment opportunity regardless of race, creed, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity/expression, national origin, disability, age, genetic information, veteran status, marital status, pregnancy or related condition (including breastfeeding), expecting or parents-to-be, criminal histories consistent with legal requirements, or any other basis protected by law.
