Embedded Firmware Engineering Intern HVAC Field DevicesWhat you will do:Johnson Controls invites you to apply for a year-round internship opportunity within our Product Development team. This internship offers hands-on experience in embedded firmware development for HVAC field devices such as sensors actuators and controllers. Youll collaborate with experienced engineers to support the design development and testing of embedded systems that drive building automation and environmental control.How you will do it:As an Embedded Firmware Engineering Intern focused on HVAC Field Devices you will:Assist in developing and debugging embedded firmware for HVAC sensors actuators and control modulesWrite and maintain test scripts and validation tools for embedded systemsParticipate in engineering-level testing of HVAC field devices and embedded platformsSupport documentation efforts for firmware architecture test procedures and engineering reportsCollaborate with cross-functional teams including hardware software and systems engineeringContribute to continuous improvement initiatives in embedded development processesPerform other engineering-related tasks and projects as assignedWhat we look forRequired Qualifications:Pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering Computer Engineering Software Engineering or related fieldLocated in the greater Milwaukee area and available to work full time during the summer and at least 20 hours/week during the semester and full-time during breaksStrong programming skills in C/C for embedded systemsFamiliarity with microcontroller platforms (e.g. ARM Cortex-M STM32)Understanding of embedded debugging tools (e.g. JTAG SWD oscilloscopes)Comfortable working with version control systems like GitProficiency in Microsoft Office tools (Excel PowerPoint Word)Highly organized with strong communication skillsU.S. citizen or legally authorized to work in the U.S.Self-motivated and adaptable to changing prioritiesThis is a year-round internship with high expectations.Preferred Qualifications:Exposure to HVAC systems and building automation technologiesExperience with BACnet Modbus or other field communication protocolsFamiliarity with real-time operating systems (RTOS) and low-power embedded designKnowledge of scripting languages like Python for test automationIdeal candidate is a Freshman or Sophomore seeking long-term internship experienceAbout JCIs Internship/Co-Op Program:During your assignment with JCI you may have a variety of developmental opportunities in addition to your work assignments such as roundtable discussions with senior leaders to skill-building workshops networking events and community activities.
