Title: Forest Inventory and Analysis Program ManagerState Role Title:Natural Resource Manager IHiring Range: $65000.00-$77000.00 Pay Band: 4Agency: Department of ForestryLocation:Charlottesville Nat Resrcs DrAgency Website:Recruitment Type: General Public - GJob DutiesThe Virginia Department of Forestrys Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) Program is part of a nationwide initiative led by the U.S. Forest Service to monitor and assess forest resources. Through systematic field-based measurements on permanent plots across public and private lands the program collects comprehensive data on forest conditions including tree metrics forest health understory vegetation habitat types downed woody material silvicultural practices natural disturbances and land ownership.The FIA Program Manager supervises up to seven FIA Foresters and wage technicians ensuring statewide plot productivity and data quality. Responsibilities include maintaining productivity records reporting impediments to the Utilization and Marketing (U&M) Program Manager and the U.S. Forest Service and conducting field measurements either independently or in crews. The manager also collaborates with internal DOF staff US Forest Service personnel and other external partners to interpret FIA data and develop analytical report. These summaries are shared with internal and external stakeholder upon request. Based at the Charlottesville Headquarters the manager travels frequently across Virginia to support field operations. The role offers a flexible MondayFriday schedule to accommodate weather-related delays and ensure timely data collection.A key aspect of the position is maintaining compliance with U.S. Forest Service data standards. The Program Manager provides training and certification support for new foresters and ensures ongoing performance quality across the team. Additional duties include establishing and measuring forest sample plots identifying stand histories evaluating management opportunities and analyzing logging methods for product utilization. Candidates must be physically capable of navigating rough terrain while carrying equipment and possess strong skills in vegetation identification aerial photo interpretation GPS and electronic data systems and team collaboration. A valid drivers license and frequent travel with overnight stays are required.Minimum Qualifications1. Experience in Forest Management or related natural resources field or equivalent field 2. Knowledge of scientific forestry principles and conventional forest measurement and management techniques3. Skilled in using forest management tools on standing and felled trees4. Proficient in map reading compass use and pacing across forested terrain5. Physically able to walk over rough terrain while carrying equipment6. Ability to identify tree species and associated vegetation7. Skilled in interpreting vegetative cover species composition and terrain from aerial photos or remote sensing8. Capable of recognizing stand histories and identifying forest management opportunities9. Proficient in using GPS units and electronic data collection equipment10. Valid drivers license and willingness to travel frequently including overnight stays11. Strong teamwork and interpersonal skills and ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with diverse personnel.Additional Considerations1. Certified by U.S. Forest Service for performance at acceptable FIA standards.2. Experience supervising and developing employees.3.
