Genomics Scientist🔍Dean of Research, Stanford, California, United StatesNew📁Research📅5 hours ago Post Date📅107917 Requisition #SCHOOL/UNIT DESCRIPTION:Anchored in the Wu Tsai Neurosciences Institute and the Office of the Dean of Research, the new Knight Initiative in Brain Resilience is a cross-disciplinary scientific endeavor aimed at addressing neurodegeneration, aging and brain resilience. Diseases and associated issues of cognitive decline like Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, dementia, and related ailments are increasing with our rapidly aging global population. Stanford seeks to advance a new era of brain science focused on accelerating the fundamental understanding of the aging brain, both the biological causes of neurodegeneration and how to increase brain resilience throughout the lifespan. POSITION SUMMARY:The Knight Initiative for Brain Resilience is seeking a Life Sciences Professional 2 to perform various functions and activities involved in research projects dedicated to brain aging and resilience. This position will be responsible for planning and executing genomics and multi-omics experiments, analyzing data, and interpreting results in support of ongoing research projects. The individual in this role will specialize in genomics, liquid handling, and sequencing, and will be expected to take ownership of their assigned portion of the research and make recommendations on experimental design and/or research direction to the principal investigator as needed. This position will also be responsible for developing new research protocols where appropriate protocols are not described in the literature or where modification or adaptation of standard procedures and protocols is required. The individual will work in a multidisciplinary team, to develop new research protocols that lead to new knowledge or understanding, and to communicate the results of the research to both scientific and non-scientific audiences. This position involves overseeing the daily activities of the laboratory including lab maintenance, maintaining lab stock, managing chemical inventory and safety records, and providing general lab support as needed. The Life Sciences Professional 2 may assist with purchasing laboratory equipment and modifying or adapting laboratory equipment and/or developing new instruments to meet the needs of the research projects. This position is a two-year fixed-term appointment, with possibility of renewal based on programmatic need and funding availability, with a primary work site on Stanford University’s main campus. CORE DUTIES:Independently conduct a portion of the research project(s). Make recommendations on experimental design and/or research direction to principal investigator.Independently conduct complex (lab and/or field) experiments to gather data for a portion of a major research project.Interpret and analyze results, often where few guidelines exist, and make modifications to existing procedures and protocols.Develop new research protocols where appropriate protocols are not described in the literature or where modification or adaptation of standard procedures and protocols is required.Participate in multidisciplinary teams across different faculties or schools.Perform ongoing literature review to remain current with new procedures and related research; apply to ongoing research and development of new protocols.Contribute substantively to the preparation of papers for publication, especially in the results section, and to publication of findings. Present ongoing work to colleagues and/or academic conferences.Oversee supply and equipment budget under supervision of principal investigator or business manager.Work with health and safety department to ensure lab complies with regulations and all required trainings.Supervise (either formally or informally) staff or students as needed, including oversight and direction on techniques, as well as consultation on project work. Serve as a technical resource for other research staff.Oversee the daily activities of the laboratory including lab maintenance; maintain lab stock, manage chemical inventory and safety records, and provide general lab support as needed. May assist with purchasing laboratory equipment.MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:Education & Experience:Bachelor's degree in related scientific field and two years of relevant work experience; or Master’s degree in a related scientific field. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:Comprehensive understanding of scientific principles. General computer skills and ability to quickly learn and master computer programs, databases, and scientific applications.Strong analytical skills and excellent judgment.Ability to maintain detailed records of experiments and outcomes.Ability to work under deadlines with general guidance is essential. Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to accurately complete detailed work.Experience with various genomics and sequencing techniques such as PCR, qPCR, NGS, etc Ability to operate and maintain equipment used in liquid handling, genomics and NGS experiments PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:A Master’s Degree (recommended) in Biology, Bioengineering, Genomics or related field.3+ years of experience in a research lab setting with a focus on genomics, liquid handling, and sequencingStrong analytical skills and experience with data analysis software and statistical techniquesExcellent attention to detail and the ability to keep accurate and organized recordsStrong communication and teamwork skillsAbility to work independently and as part of a team PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:Frequently grasp lightly/fine manipulation, perform desk-based computer tasks, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.Frequently stand/walk, sit, twist/bend/stoop/squat, grasp forcefully.Rarely kneel/crawl, climb (ladders, scaffolds, or other). * - Consistent with its obligations under the law, the University will provide reasonable accommodation to any employee with a disability who requires accommodation to perform the essential functions of the job. The expected pay range for this position is $85,376 to $99,581 per annum.
