Appropriate college course work may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience.Job Description: Takes lead role in day-to-day activities of the chemical waste management group. This includes the collection, segregation, packaging and disposal of chemical wastes. These are extremely hazardous materials including explosives, flammables, carcinogens, acute poisons, corrosives, etc. and require specialized educational and technical expertise for handling. Develops and delivers training programs to hazardous waste generators to ensure compliance with state and federal requirements. The independent review and interpretation of federal and state regulations. Disposal scheduling and related activities. Requires interaction with various chemical waste companies and representatives of both the University of Florida and the proposed contractors. Prepares regulatory paperwork for hazardous waste shipments. Assists in hiring, training and review of technical OPS assistants. Work on special projects for department head as required. Carry out independent research projects to develop and evaluate new technologies for the management of chemical wastes. Generation of reports for department director, Florida DEP and federal EPA as required by law. Education of the University community regarding the application of these regulations and the use of hazardous chemicals including the development of guidance documents. Contact is mainly with principle investigators and laboratory staff. Attendance at professional meetings and workshops when feasible and review of chemical journals to maintain professional credentials and certifications and to keep abreast of current developments in the field. Supervision of spill cleanup and related activities. Possession of valid Florida Driver's License is required. Post offer health assessment and Criminal Background check is required. This position requires a post-offer health assessment. Hazardous Material response team training Annual EPA training NORMAL WORK SCHEDULE: Monday through Friday: 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.; 40 hours per week; expected to assist in nights and weekends for emergency response.Expected Salary: $19.16 to $27.78 /hrRequired Qualifications: A bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization and one (1) year of appropriate experience. Appropriate college course work may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience.Preferred: EDUCATION & TRAINNG: A bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization and two years of related experience. General and Organic Chemistry with accompanying lab coursework EXPERIENCE: Two or more years of experience working in the area of chemical and/or radioactive waste management KNOWLEDGE: Knowledge of basic safety principles Knowledge of basic safety principles Working knowledge of chemistry Knowledge of regulations pertaining to chemical and radioactive waste management Knowledge of hazardous materials shipping regulations and hazardous materials emergency response procedures. Understanding of basic principles of radioactivity and radiation protection technology.
