Job DescriptionJob DescriptionPOSITION: Head CookDEPARTMENT: Early Childhood - Birth through FiveLOCATION: Bushwick Child & Family Center: 319 Stanhope Street, Brooklyn, NY REPORTS TO: Educational Site DirectorDATE: October 2025SALARY: $35,360SCHEDULE: 8:00am - 4:00pmJOB SUMMARY: The cook implements food services in Grand Street Settlement’s early childhood program, serving children ages 3-5, following the Department of Health, CACFP, Department of Education, and Head Start Performance Standards. Responsibilities include preparing attractive, USDA-approved meals; keeping the kitchen and classroom areas clean and sanitary according to Health Department ordinances; and maintaining adequate food stocks, kitchen supplies, and mandated CACFP nutrition records (including meal counts and food production records).EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS:High School or General Equivalency Diploma (GED), plus current food handler’s certificate.Must have experience cooking for culturally diverse groups of children and adults in a tasteful manner as per CACFP regulations. Experience in purchasing credible food per CACFP guidelines.Knowledge of early childhood nutrition.Knowledge of the first in, first out rule and keeping inventory of food products. Knowledge of record keeping. Knowledge of infectious diseases and food contamination control per DOH regulations. Basic computer skills and basic math knowledge for record-keeping.Lift and move heavy and bulky objects weighing up to 50 lbs. PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS:Clearance through DOE Fingerprint Screening $101.75, NYS Central Registry $25.00, Sex Offender Registry clearance, three (3) reference checks, physical examination with updated TB test, varicella, Tdap, MMR.Obtain a Mandated Reporter training certificate (every two (2) years) and comply with the agency’s policy and procedure regarding identifying and reporting child abuse and neglect.If hired, Grand Street recommends that all potential employees provide proof of complete COVID-19 vaccination, including a booster if applicable. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:Under the direct supervision of the Center Director and Health and Nutrition coordinator the Assistant Cook shall be responsible for:Assist in preparing nutritious meals, considering children’s various cultures and individual nutritional needs.Understand and use child nutritional needs and age-specific portion sizes to prepare meals by USDA, Head Start, and CACFP guidelines.Understand and strictly adhere to health, safety, food handling, and sanitation requirements before, during, and after meal preparation.Assist in preparing and participating in family-style meals for children, volunteers, and staff. Assist in maintaining nutrition record-keeping and reporting as directed by the supervisor.Review food and supplies order sheets. Store food and supplies appropriately.Monitor and maintain proper food temperatures. Assist in ordering food and substitutions, following the menu. Work with a Nutritionist, Health Coordinator, and Health Specialist.Maintain appropriate cleanliness of all kitchen materials and supplies as required. Maintain and be aware of center allergies and concerns. Assist in training substitutes and volunteers to support kitchen dutiesCoordinate delivery of food to classrooms.
