The Role: Highway Transportation Department Manager Location: Princeton NJ Base Salary: 150000 - 200000 USD/year (Based on Experience) Mandatory Requirements: 20 years of highway design an Active New Jersey Professional Engineering (PE) License NJDOT/NJTA experience Writing Proposals leadership/mentorship capability and Project Management We are seeking an accomplished civil and highway engineering leader to lead and expand our Transportation Department. This pivotal role combines technical excellence with strategic business development requiring a seasoned professional who will drive departmental growth oversee the delivery of complex projects and provide expert guidance to Project Managers across diverse transportation initiatives. The successful candidate will serve as a key liaison between clients and internal teams ensuring superior project outcomes from conception through completion. Required Qualifications: Education & Licensure Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering (minimum required) Note: A Masters degree may substitute for two years of required experience Professional Engineer (PE) License in New Jersey (mandatory) NY State PE License (highly desirable for expanded market reach) Professional Experience Minimum 20 years of progressive experience in Highway Design and Transportation Engineering Core Competencies Superior written and verbal communication abilities Demonstrated expertise in technical proposal development and writing Polished presentation and client-facing skills Advanced problem-solving and critical thinking capabilities Employment Terms Full-time in-office position based in Princeton New Jersey Key Responsibilities: Technical Leadership & Quality Management Exercise sound engineering judgment while maintaining the highest standards of technical quality and fiscal responsibility Provide expert oversight ensuring projects meet both engineering excellence and budget objectives Regulatory Expertise & Compliance Apply comprehensive knowledge of NJDOT (New Jersey Department of Transportation) standards processes and procedures Demonstrate familiarity with NJTA (New Jersey Turnpike Authority) requirements and protocols Navigate complex regulatory environments with confidence and expertise Team Development & Mentorship Actively mentor coach and develop design staff to build departmental capabilities Foster a culture of continuous learning and technical excellence Transfer knowledge and institutional expertise to emerging professionals Strategic Planning & Business Development Collaborate with regional and office leadership to define project strategy scope budget and timeline Identify and pursue innovative engineering solutions that differentiate our service offerings Develop and cultivate strategic teaming partnerships to expand market opportunities Lead proposal efforts and new business initiatives Client & Stakeholder Engagement Represent the firm in meetings with clients government agencies and project stakeholders Assess client requirements and translate needs into actionable project parameters Lead discussions on design approaches permitting strategies and regulatory compliance matters Build and maintain strong relationships that drive repeat business and referrals Ideal Candidate Profile The successful candidate will be a growth-minded engineering professional who balances technical mastery with business acumen-someone who thrives on building teams developing client relationships and driving departmental expansion while maintaining hands-on involvement in complex transportation projects.
