Human Resources Generalist

The Human Resources Generalist supports the day-to-day HR operations of a manufacturing facility by administering a wide range of human resources functions, including recruitment, employee relations, benefits administration, compliance, training, performance management, and workforce planning. This role partners closely with production leadership, supervisors, and employees across multiple shifts to support business objectives, maintain workforce compliance, and foster a safe, productive, and engaged work environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as a trusted resource for employees and supervisors regarding HR policies, procedures, and workplace concerns.
  • Investigate employee relations issues, complaints, and policy violations, documenting findings and recommending appropriate action.
  • Support conflict resolution and maintain positive employee relations throughout the facility.
  • Assist management with corrective actions, coaching, counseling, and disciplinary processes.
  • Promote employee engagement, retention, and a positive workplace culture.
  • Coordinate full-cycle recruiting for hourly and salaried positions, including production, maintenance, warehouse, and administrative roles.
  • Partner with hiring managers to identify workforce needs and staffing priorities.
  • Conduct interviews, reference checks, screenings, and new hire processing.
  • Participate in job fairs, community outreach programs, and workforce development initiatives.
  • Manage onboarding activities to ensure successful integration of new employees.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations.
  • Maintain personnel files and HR records in accordance with company policies and legal requirements.
  • Support compliance with FMLA, ADA, workers' compensation, EEO, OSHA, and other applicable regulations.
  • Assist with internal and external audits related to HR, safety, and compliance matters.
  • Communicate and enforce company policies consistently across all employee groups and shifts.
  • Partner with Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) teams to support workplace safety initiatives.
  • Assist in managing workers' compensation claims, return-to-work programs, and injury reporting processes.
  • Participate in safety committee meetings and employee safety training activities.
  • Promote a culture of safety and accountability throughout the manufacturing facility.
  • Support benefits enrollment, employee inquiries, and annual open enrollment activities.
  • Administer leave programs, including FMLA, personal leaves, military leave, and disability programs.
  • Maintain accurate leave documentation and ensure compliance with applicable regulations.
  • Assist managers with performance evaluations, coaching, employee development, and succession planning activities.
  • Coordinate training programs for compliance, safety, leadership development, and employee skill enhancement.
  • Track training completion and maintain employee training records.
  • Support workforce development initiatives that improve productivity and employee retention.
  • Maintain employee data in HRIS, timekeeping, and payroll systems.
  • Process personnel transactions, including status changes, promotions, transfers, and terminations.
  • Generate reports and metrics related to turnover, attendance, recruiting, retention, and workforce trends.
  • Support payroll processing and ensure timekeeping accuracy for hourly employees.
  • Assist with workforce planning and staffing analyses.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Industrial Relations, or a related field preferred.
  • 3-5 years of Human Resources experience, preferably in a manufacturing, distribution, logistics, or industrial environment.
  • Experience supporting hourly and salaried employees in a multi-shift operation.
  • Experience with employee relations, recruiting, investigations, and compliance administration.
  • Knowledge of employment laws and regulations, including FMLA, ADA, FLSA, OSHA, and workers' compensation.
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing workforce dynamics and labor challenges.
  • Ability to build effective relationships with employees at all organizational levels.
  • Strong communication, conflict resolution, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management abilities.
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and HRIS systems.
  • Ability to work flexible hours to support multiple shifts, as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

  • SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR, or SPHR certification.
  • Experience with union and non-union manufacturing environments.
  • Experience with workforce planning, attendance management, and employee engagement programs.
  • Experience using HRIS, applicant tracking systems (ATS), and payroll systems.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to move throughout a manufacturing facility, including production and warehouse areas.
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, and use a computer for extended periods.
  • Occasional lifting of up to 25 pounds may be required.

Working Conditions

  • Combination of office and manufacturing floor environment.
  • Regular interaction with production employees, supervisors, managers, and external service providers.
  • May require flexibility to support first, second, and third shifts as business needs dictate.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Chattanooga, TN.

The pay range for this position is $27.00 - $30.00/hr.
