DescriptionINTERN WATER POLLUTION CONTROL PLANT DIVISIONPART-TIME INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITYCasual non-benefited employees are limited to working no more than twenty-five (25) hours per week and no more than 900 hours in a fiscal year (July 1-June 30).Paid intern positions are available within the Environmental Services Department. The positions are an excellent part-time opportunity for an individual with a strong background in mathematics physics engineering chemistry and/or biology wishing to obtain work experience in the Environmental Studies field. Current student enrollment is not required.Enrichment OpportunitiesLearn and work with the Citys wastewater treatment plant operations group SCADA system and computerized maintenance management system (CMMS).Obtain a California State Water Resources Control Board Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator-In-Training (OIT) certificate and learn concepts of wastewater treatment processes. Hours of experience with the OIT certificate will count towards the required 1800 hours required to become a certified operator.Hours: the selected candidate will work under supervision on weekdays between 6:00 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. The specific days and hours will be decided by the hiring manager in consultation with the selected candidate.Essential Job Functions(May include but are not limited to the following):Learn and understand the basics of wastewater treatment and apply those skills under direct supervision.As needed opportunity to enroll in online self-paced training on wastewater topics to prepare for certification testing.Learn to operate a wide variety of pumps valves and gates.Learn and understand the operation of wastewater treatment equipment such as blowers mechanical bar screens chemical dosing equipment collectors drives aerators and motor control centers.Lean to monitor read and calculate wastewater flow through various Water Pollution Control Plant treatment processes using meters gauges routine visual inspections and the plants distributive control system.Observe the collection of grab and composite samples for process control and NPDES Permit compliance.Logs test results meter readings flow rates preventative maintenance activities and other data.Logs events related to operations and logs process control changes.Writes and follows up on work orders for corrective maintenance.Job shadows WPCP operators performing operational rounds to inspect pumps motors chemical storage and dosing equipment distributive controls and other equipment for proper operation.Observes WPCP operators performing basic to moderately complex preventative maintenance tasks on plant equipment such as greasing changing oil and replacing parts.Participates in technical skills development and safety training programs; learns safety rules regulations and emergency procedures.Attend briefing meetings regularly and apply that knowledge systematically and diligently.Work effectively with City staff consultants administrators and the general public; the candidate is expected to conduct him/herself in a highly professional manner at all times while representing the City.Assists City staff with other duties as desired including some administrative tasks as needed.WORKING CONDITIONSPosition requires prolonged sitting standing walking on level uneven and slippery surfaces reaching twisting turning kneeling bending squatting and stooping in the performance of daily activities. The position also requires grasping repetitive hand movement and fine coordination in using a computer keyboard and certain tools. The position also requires near and far vision when reading written work related documents and using a computer. Acute hearing is required when providing phone and personal customer service. The need to lift drag carry and push equipment tools and supplies up to 50 pounds is also required.
