This includes supporting faculty, staff and student systems in offices and labs as well as assisting in management of data centers, maintenance of virtualization infrastructure, high-performance computing clusters, and storage systems. The ideal candidate will be responsible for the administration, documentation, and optimization of computing environments that support academic and research initiatives.Key Responsibilities:Physical and Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) AdministrationProvide support to Faculty, Staff and Students in all Watson College Departments and Schools as a member of the Watson Computing teamMaintain School of Computing Academic computing labsLinux Based Operating System, Physical and Virtual deploymentsAssist in supporting the Watson College's VDI environment (Watson View).Develop and maintain administrative documentation and provide recommendations for improvements.Data Center OperationsAssist in maintaining comprehensive documentation of the data center environments, including maintenance records, access procedures, asset inventory, and usage information for chargebacksAssist in the administration and support of the Watson College HPC Cluster (Spiedie) and the academic OpenHPC clusterConsult with faculty, staff, and research assistants to assess computational academic and research needs and provide appropriate guidance of resourcesServer & Storage System ManagementAssist in management of Watson College servers and storage systems, including infrastructure dedicated to specific Schools and departments within the Watson CollegeAssist with supporting the Watson College virtual server environment (VMware)Assist in management, procurement, inventory, and setup of virtual and physical serversAssist with the management of research storage systemsAssist in management of the Watson College's iSCSI Storage environmentEnsure a secure computing environment in collaboration with the ITS Information Security OfficeHigh-Performance Computing (HPC) Cluster SupportAssist with management of cluster user accounts, including creation, removal, and group managementMonitor daily cluster operations and coordinate updates and patches to minimize impactWork with faculty to integrate new computing nodes and obtain vendor quotesGather, monitor, and incorporate HPC users' feedback to improve ease of use and support for diverse user requirementsGeneral ResponsibilitiesProvide backup support during staff absences or emergenciesOffer technical assistance to the University Helpdesk for Watson-related issuesWork collaboratively and professionally with faculty, staff, and studentsRecommend and implement improvements to existing procedures and infrastructureAssist with coordinating integration of new employee computer accounts with ITSManage Active Directory (AD) objects, organizational units (OUs), and Group PoliciesTroubleshoot AD-related issues in collaboration with ITSAssign user rights and manage secure network resourcesRequirements:Bachelor's degree (or higher)Experience administering Linux-based and Windows Server-based server environmentsExperience with network configurations (LAN) in Linux, Windows, MacOS, network switches, and routersProficiency in cybersecurity fundamentals and practices in system administrationFamiliarity with managing VMware-based virtual environmentsFamiliarity with storage technologies (iSCSI, NAS, SAN)Knowledge of Active Directory management and security best practicesDocumentation and organizational skillsAbility to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced academic and research environmentPreferred:Bachelor's Degree (or higher), with two years' experience in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related fieldMinimum of 2 years of experience in data center operations, virtualization, and/or HPC managementExperience with high-performance computing cluster administrationScripting experience (Bash, PowerShell, Python, etc.) for automationExperience in a higher education research computing environmentFamiliarity with Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) solutionsVisa sponsorship is not available for this positionAdditional Information:Offers of employment may be contingent upon successful completion of a pre-employment background check and verification of degree(s) and credentials.Binghamton University is a tobacco-free campus.Pursuant to Executive Order 161, no State entity, as defined by the Executive Order, is permitted to ask, or mandate, in any form, that an applicant for employment provide his or her current compensation, or any prior compensation history, until such time as the applicant is extended a conditional offer of employment with compensation.
