Laboratory Assistant Is are expected to progress tothe Laboratory Assistant II level after no less than six months and no more than one year ofsatisfactory on-the-job experience. Laboratory Assistant II is distinguished from the Lab AssistantIII level in that incumbents of the latter are CPT II certified by the State of California to performarterial blood gas drawing. Laboratory Assistant IIIs are also always competent to perform dutiesin either the dispatch or specimen processing sections of the Lab or both as well as all the duties asa Lab Assistant II.Job Requirements Prerequisites and Essential Functions:EDUCATIONHigh School diploma or equivalent preferredEXPERIENCELaboratory Assistant II: Six months to one year of experience in the classification ofLab Assistant I in MGH Service or a minimum of one year ofexperience as a Lab Assistant or in a similar capacitypreferably in an acute care environment including experiencein venous and capillary blood sampling is required. Arterialpuncture and EKG experience preferred.LICENSURE AND CERTIFICATIONSBasic Life Support Required within 90 days of hireCert Phlebotomy Tech I OR Cert Phlebotomy Tech II Required 2 at hireIntegrative Agitation Management (IAM) Required within 30 days of hirePREREQUISITE SKILLS1. Ability to work in teams in which all members are mutually accountable2. Ability to work collaboratively with team members hospital staff patients andphysicians3. Capable of organizing multiple tasks using time management skills and attention todetail4. Proficient in blood specimen procurement venous and capillary5. Knowledge of microbiological techniques and terminology preferred6. Knowledge of cardiac arrhythmias and cardiac drugs preferred7. Knowledge of blood/body fluid precautions8. Basic computer knowledge with ability to do data entry and retrieval9. Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills10. Ability to read speak write understand and follow English and written instructions11. Responsible for learning and maintaining current knowledge of hospital polices anddepartment policies and procedures.
