Job Title: St. Joseph Montessori School Long-Term SubstituteLevel: Middle School ⅞ (History Science)Term of Position: March - June 2026Location: 933 Hamlet St. Columbus OH 43201Job Status: Hourly Non-ExemptReports to: Head of SchoolJob Description: Join the St. Joseph Montessori School team as a long-term substitute working as a History and Science teacher in our Middle School (7th and 8th Grade) environment.Key Responsibilities: Support the academic social and emotional growth of the individual student in a multi-age classroom. This position is for our middle school classroom which is a multi-age classroom of students in 7th/8th grade working in combination and by ability. This particular position is for a long-term substitute from March until June 2026 presenting/implementing/teaching lessons for History and Science while collaborating and co-teaching with other members of the SJMS Middle School team. As a long-term substitute you will be allowed to create and implement lessons with the support of your co-teacher and administrators that follow Montessori principles and meet state standards. The Middle School teacher serves as a Montessori Guide for children in their third plane of development.Curriculum:Support the academic social and emotional growth of the individual studentObserve and guide the students through their learningEstablish and maintain the classroom true to the Montessori philosophy paying particular attention to the needs of studentsDesign/Implement/Present lessons that ignite curiosity within students while adhering to the Montessori Method and meeting State of Ohio academic standardsImplement and extend the curriculum as student needs dictate.Maintain accurate record keeping and planning through the use of Transparent Classroom as guided by your co-teacher and administrator.Communication:Facilitate a respectful environment for students and adults by advocating conflict resolution and Grace and Courtesy lessons.Use Positive Discipline techniques to redirect children as needed.Communicate via newsletters (email) with parents about their childrens school lives every week and work in tandem with school administration to educate parents in Montessori philosophy.Attend school-wide events and functions as a member of the SJMS Team.Record keeping:Carefully observe and keep daily records of each students progression through the curriculum.In keeping with Montessori pedagogy and best practices keep and maintain an observation log. Use the observations of students to guide instruction based on the needs of the child.Maintain the schools system of record keeping (Gradelink).Complete cumulative records.Keep a school calendar of events.Cooperative Work with Co-Teacher Classroom Assistant and Interns:Establish a harmonious relationship with co-teacher/s assistants staff interns and administrators. Work in conjunction with special area teachers.Cooperate and collaborate with specifically Middle School co-teachers and administrators to implement curriculum guide students and create an engaging environment.Attend weekly level meetings and staff meetings.Administrative Duties:Plan prepare and organize all materials for parent volunteers if necessary.Assist in the planning and maintenance of the building materials and playground to ensure they are clean safe and maintained.Report any maintenance issues to the Head of School Director of Operations or Facility ManagerCare for all classroom animals and plants.Organize planning time for reviewing lessons curriculum and student work.Hours 8:00 am 3:30 pm (4:30 pm on Wednesday) including a half-hour lunch break.Attend participate and inform (based on data) Student Support Team meetings that are necessary for the success of every learner.Complete all assigned paperwork (such as Administrative Cost Reimbursements Child History Forms Admissions Interviews student permanent record files etc.) in an accurate and timely manner as assisted by your co-teacher and Administrators.Additional duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Head of School.Position Requirements/Physical Capabilities:Ability to support and promote a team environmentEnthusiasm initiative high energy level sense of humor and flexibilityPhysical ability to work around children including sitting on the floor standing crouching and climbing stairsMust be able to lift and carry or otherwise move 25 pounds on an occasional basisEnthusiasm when working with children and adolescentsRequired to complete FBI/BCI Background Check Protecting Gods Children 3-hour workshop CPR/First Aid Certification Religion I course of study (Diocese of Columbus requirement) and other professional development as assigned.Education Requirements (mandatory optional and preferred) :Credential from the Association Montessori Society Association Montessori Internationale or from a MACTE-approved Teacher Education Program (optional/preferred).Bachelors Degree in Education (optional/preferred)State of Ohio Teachers License (Resident Educator 5-year professional license or Substitute License) in area/level of teaching (optional/preferred)CPR/First Aid certification (mandatory - SJMS will provide if not already completed)Willingness to complete professional development on an ongoing basis. The Academy consisted of grades one through twelve. Recognizing the value of the Montessori approach to education parents requested and were granted the extension of the program into the elementary school.Although declining enrollment forced the closing of the 100-year-old high school in 1977 a cooperative effort between the Sisters and the parent body resulted in the transition of SJMS into a private Pre-K-8 Diocesan Montessori school with nonprofit status and an elected parent Board of Trustees.In 2021 SJMS opened its first Toddler program accepting students as young as 18 months of 2023 St. Joseph Montessori School became the first American Montessori Society Accredited Montessori School in Central Ohio and is 1 of 222 AMS accredited schools worldwide.
