DescriptionThe Nurse Manager I is responsible for the management of nursing practice and operations on a designated unit/service. This includes but is not limited to the management of: clinical nursing practice staff recruitment retention labor relations supply chain and budget staffing employee performance evaluation quality improvement staff education medical records internal and external regulatory and survey requirements.The Nurse Manager I collaborates with multiple professionals to support and coordinate the provision / management of patient care. He or she works closely with the Nursing Clinical Director Physician Leader and staff in insuring that the Service/Unit maintains the highest standards of patient care and is responsive to the needs of the patient & family as well as the organization.ResponsibilitiesA. Clinical/Technical/ServiceResponsible to the Nursing Supervisor of the given divisionFunctions in accordance with the Nurse Practice Act the current Federal and State Regulations governing the use and dispensing of methadone the guidelines for patient care set by the Programs Administration and the philosophy of the Patient Care Services Department of the hospitalMaintains standards of nursing care and practice by supervising and evaluating nursing personnelPlans directs coordinates evaluates and facilitates the delivery of nursing care through the creative utilization of professional nursing expertiseRecognizes patients problems and participates in their resolutionContributes toward the maintenance of a professional setting that allows for growth and development of patients and staffParticipates in formulating interpreting and implementing nursing service programsPeriodically reviews with nursing staff the maintenance of complete and accurate patient-care and narcotic recordsParticipates in the orientation and evaluation of new nursing staffDemonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care based on physical psychosocial educational safety and related criteria appropriate to the age of the patients served in assigned areaAge Specific Competencies (Neonate/Infant Pediatric Adolescent Adult Geriatric)Identifies physical behavioral and emotional characteristics typical for the age groupModifies approaches based on patient age-specific needs and responses to treatmentProvides care for patients based on age-specific needsUses communication techniques which are age appropriateB. Organizational/ManagerialParticipates in the departments performance improvement activitiesMaintains patient/employee confidentiality in the management of informationObserves the Health Care Systems compliance policiesMaintains a nursing unit in compliance with the regulations of New York State Department of Health and the Commission on Accreditation of Health Care OrganizationsInterprets the hospitals nursing policy and standards relative to patient care in clinicsOversees the assignment/delegation of nursing functions and responsibilities in assigned clinics in the absence of the Head/Charge NurseSupervises and evaluates nursing staff performance with the Charge Nurse and Nursing SupervisorAssists the Division Nursing Supervisor in monitoring nursing staff attendance and adherence to program policiesParticipates in counseling and disciplining of staff when appropriateMonitors all security aspects of the medication processReviews patient and narcotic records in a timely mannerMonitors availability and maintenance of nursing equipment and supplies in the clinic(s)Interviews prospective employees and collaborates with the Division Nursing Supervisor in evaluating their personal attributes and professional qualificationsC. Educational/Professional DevelopmentParticipates in the development of other staff membersMeets regulatory licensure and annual health assessment requirementsIdentifies learning strengths and needsUtilizes learning resourcesParticipates in the hospitals Continuous Quality Improvement Program and maintains Standards of CareMakes recommendations regarding standards of patient care and policies for the Patient Care Services Department and appropriate support servicesDemonstrates willingness to evaluate own nursing practiceKeeps abreast of current nursing literatureAvails self of continuing education programs/professional conferences/seminars/workshopsKeeps abreast of legal and political issues related to health care and nursingCounsels staff with regard to pursuing on-going formal educationEncourages staff attendance at in-service and Continuing Education programsProvides learning experiences for nursing personnel on an individual basisActs as a role model to nursing staffD.
