Duties And ResponsibilitiesMajor mechanical work includes adjust repair and replace engines motors drivetrain suspension and steering electrical/electronic systems fuel systems brake systems heating and cooling systems body controls systems and hydraulic and pneumatic systems. Minor maintenance duties and repairs such as adjust lubricate change fluids and filters replace engine and body accessories and repair and replace tires. Requisition parts through Campus Stores and Outside Vendors. Estimate time and cost of services. Accurately complete service records. Assist Service Technician(s) and Mechanic(s) as required. Perform all major mechanical work on vehicles trucks trailers implements campus standby generators large and small equipment and tools. Weld ferrous and non-ferrous metals including fabrication of parts for vehicles and equipment. Participate in University Services Fleet and Equipment condition assessments. Perform all major mechanical work on mid to heavy trucks diesel engines tractors hydraulics and other specialty vehicles equipment and implements Perform related duties as assigned.Physical DemandsPredominant work is performed in the mechanic shop and the yard however inclement weather often results in difficult working conditions. The mechanic is subject to long periods of remaining in a stationary position and/or walking and exertion such as positioning self to bend stretch climb reach and work under vehicles and equipment. This position requires the ability to frequently transport and move large cumbersome heavy objects weighing up to 100 pounds. Work involves hazards associated with working around heavy vehicles and equipment such as power tools welders hydraulic lifts and mowers and working with oil fuels cleaning chemicals etc. Subject to continual loud noise from shop air compressor and machine shop tools and equipment. This position must be able to safely and competently operate a variety of vehicles large trucks and small and large equipment.
