Job Description

Join Thermo Fisher Scientific, the world leader in serving science, where your work makes a direct impact on global healthcare, research, and environmental protection. As a Mechanical Category Cost Specialist, you'll be part of a newly created role on a growing team, bringing together technical expertise and commercial acumen to drive cost transparency and sourcing excellence across our mechanical categories.

This is a high-visibility position with direct interaction across product costing initiatives and a long-term cost reduction roadmap for specific products. For the right candidate, it's a genuine opportunity to build deep expertise at the intersection of engineering and procurement, and grow into a broader commercial role over time.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Build and maintain cost models for mechanical components and assemblies, including clean-sheet and should-cost analysis
  • Conduct detailed cost breakdowns and identify cost drivers to support sourcing and negotiation strategies
  • Engage directly with suppliers to review cost structures, challenge assumptions, and drive cost-reduction opportunities
  • Lead supplier cost workshops and technical reviews focused on value engineering and continuous improvement
  • Provide fact-based cost insights to strengthen negotiations and support category leadership decisions
  • Partner with Engineering, Operations, Quality, and Finance on cost expectations and improvement initiatives
  • Support product costing initiatives and contribute to a long-term cost reduction roadmap across assigned categories

Key Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree plus 6 or more years of experience in procurement, sourcing, cost engineering, or a related field. A master's degree with equivalent experience is also a strong fit
  • The right blend of commercial and technical background: sourcing or procurement experience combined with hands-on cost knowledge in a manufacturing environment
  • Solid understanding of mechanical manufacturing processes, including machining, molding, forming, welding, and assembly, and how those processes connect to cost
  • Experience building cost models and conducting cost analysis for mechanical components or electromechanical assemblies
  • Ability to lead cost-focused conversations with both suppliers and internal engineering teams
  • Strong analytical mindset, business acumen, and comfort working across global, matrixed teams
  • Proficiency in Excel and standard procurement or analytical tools
  • Fluency in English required
  • Ability to travel 10 to 50% as required
