Position Summary
The Municipal Trash Route Manager oversees daily residential and municipal collection operations to ensure safe, timely, and efficient service delivery. This role manages drivers, monitors route performance, resolves service issues, and ensures compliance with all municipal contract requirements. The Route Manager plays a critical role in maintaining strong customer relationships with municipalities and ensuring operational excellence in the field.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

• Manage daily residential and municipal trash collection routes, ensuring on-time and accurate service.
• Supervise, coach, and support drivers, including performance management, training, and safety enforcement.
• Monitor route efficiency, make adjustments as needed, and develop improvements to reduce downtime and increase productivity.
• Review and address service issues, missed stops, complaints, and route exceptions; provide prompt resolution.
• Ensure compliance with all municipal contracts, service-level agreements, and company policies.
• Conduct ride-alongs, route audits, and field evaluations to maintain safe and efficient operations.
• Coordinate with dispatch, customer service, and maintenance to resolve operational needs and equipment issues.
• Track driver attendance, timekeeping, and adherence to policies.
• Enforce DOT, OSHA, and company safety standards; lead safety meetings and promote a strong safety culture.
• Prepare reports related to route performance, productivity, service issues, and contract compliance.
• Assist with driver hiring, onboarding, and ongoing development.
• Support planning for route changes, bulk pickups, seasonal volume shifts, and special municipal projects.

Qualifications

• Experience: Minimum of 2-3 years managing municipal or residential trash routes (waste industry experience required).
• Strong understanding of residential collection operations, routing practices, and municipal service requirements.
• Knowledge of DOT regulations, safety protocols, and waste industry equipment.
• Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with shifting priorities.
• Proficiency with route management systems, GPS/telematics, and basic computer tools.
• Valid driver's license (CDL preferred but not required).

Physical Requirements

• Ability to perform fieldwork, including climbing in/out of trucks, standing, walking, and working outdoors in various weather.
• Work Environment
• Combination of office and field work, including exposure to operational hazards, traffic, weather, and noise typical of waste collection environments.
