Job Description

Primary Purpose:Plan and provide therapy to students with mental physical or emotional disabilities. Assess students and provide therapeutic intervention to maximize physical or mental functioning increase independent functioning and/or adjust to disabilities. Serve as a member of the multidisciplinary evaluation and planning team who determines eligibility for special education services. Act as a resource to ensure the district complies with all legal and compliance issues associated with local state and federal level.Qualifications:Education/Certification:Bachelors degree in occupational therapy or related programValid Texas license as an occupational therapist granted by the Texas Board of Occupational Therapy ExaminersSpecial Knowledge/Skills:Working knowledge of federal laws and state guidelines.Working knowledge of rehabilitation procedures activities and equipment used in occupational therapy.Ability to instruct students and manage behavior.Excellent organizational communication and interpersonal skills.Experience:One year experience as an occupational therapist.Experience working in an educational setting is preferred.Major Responsibilities and Duties: TherapyPlan and provide direct and consultative services consistent with occupational therapy goals contained in students Individual Education Plans (IEP). Evaluate student progress and make recommendations regarding occupational therapy services.Design construct alter and provide students with adaptive equipment and devices to promote maximum independence.Assess students with disabilities and determine eligibility for services.ConsultationPresent staff development in assigned school as requested.Conduct one-on-one consultation with teachers parents and others to assist with selection and use of adaptive equipment and material that will enhance student learning. Student ManagementCreate an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the maturity level interests and needs of the student.Establish control and administer discipline according to the Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.Program ManagementParticipate in the Admission Review and Dismissal (ARD) Committee to assist with the interpretation of assessment data appropriate placement and goal setting for students according to district procedures.Develop and coordinate a continuing evaluation of the occupational therapy program and implement changes based on the findings.AdministrationCompile maintain and file all reports records and other documents as required.Comply with policies established by federal and state law State Board of Education rule and local board policy. Comply with all district and campus routines and regulations.Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.Supervisory Responsibilities:Supervise assigned Occupational Therapist Assistant(s)- (COTA) as neededWorking Conditions:Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment including personal computer and peripheralsPosture: Prolonged sitting; occasional bending/stooping pushing/pulling and twistingMotion: Repetitive hand motions including frequent keyboarding and use of mouse; occasional reachingLifting: Occasional light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds) Moderate lifting. May be required to lift and transfer students to and from wheelchairs or assist with positioning students with physical disabilities.
