Ophthalmology Tech at Mayo Clinic

DescriptionThe Ophthalmology Technician is responsible for preparing the patient for their eye examination prior to being seen by providers within the Department of Ophthalmology. The Ophthalmology Technician works directly with patient care. The technicians duties are measurement of visual acuity manual lensometry tonometry pupil evaluation anterior chamber depth measurement instillation of eye medications color vision testing patient medical history assisting with laser procedures assisting with minor surgical procedures and instructions to patients and/or individuals accompanying patients. Data derived from these tests are presented to the staffing Ophthalmologist/Optometrist. The Ophthalmology Technician is expected to establish and maintain professional interaction with patients physicians and allied health staff and participate as a member of the Ophthalmology staff with various tasks as assigned by Supervisor Assistant Supervisor and Ophthalmic Assistant Lead.QualificationsHigh school degree or equivalent is required. Contact lens experience is helpful. Strong communication and organization skills are needed. The Ophthalmology Technician must be able to work independently meet special needs of a diverse patient population provide competent assistance with laser procedures function in a high-paced multi-specialty area and assist in other technical duties. Basic computer knowledge is necessary and must be capable of learning new computer skills and adapting to the Electronic Environment on an ongoing basis.
