Part-Time Medical Director – Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC) at Confidential
JOB DESCRIPTION
Role Overview
We are seeking an experienced Part-Time Medical Director to provide physician leadership, clinical oversight, and regulatory governance for a licensed and/or accredited Ambulatory Surgery Center in California.
This is a primarily non-clinical role focused on medical governance, quality assurance, accreditation, and medication / controlled-substance compliance. Surgical or procedural services are not required and, if applicable, would be addressed under a separate agreement.
The Medical Director serves as the ASC’s senior physician leader, ensuring patient safety, regulatory compliance, and adherence to applicable California laws and accreditation standards.

Core Responsibilities
Medical & Clinical Oversight
• Serve as Medical Director of record for the ASC
• Provide physician leadership over clinical policies, standards of care, and medical governance
• Participate in quality assurance, quality improvement, and peer review activities
• Review and address clinical incidents, adverse events, and corrective action plans as needed
• Oversee credentialing and privileging of surgeons and anesthesia providers

Licensing & Accreditation
• Support ongoing compliance with California licensing and regulatory requirements
• Act as physician leader for ASC accreditation (e.g., AAAASF, AAAHC, or equivalent)
• Review and approve clinical policies, infection control plans, and patient safety protocols
• Participate in accreditation surveys, inspections, and follow-up actions as required

Pharmacy & Controlled-Substance Oversight
• Serve as the responsible physician leader for medication and controlled-substance compliance, as applicable
• Provide oversight of medication safety, including ordering, storage, administration, documentation, and disposal
• Collaborate with the Consulting Pharmacist on pharmacy policies, audits, and compliance reviews
• Support compliance with applicable requirements of the California Board of Pharmacy, DEA, and other authorities

Governance & Collaboration
• Work collaboratively with ownership, administration, anesthesia providers, and consultants
• Provide medical input on matters impacting patient safety, quality, and regulatory compliance
• Be available for reasonable consultation related to clinical or accreditation matters
• Maintain clear separation between medical governance responsibilities and any separately contracted clinical services

Qualifications
• MD or DO licensed and in good standing in California
• Prior medical leadership experience in an ASC, surgical clinic, hospital outpatient department, or similar setting
• Strong understanding of ASC governance, accreditation standards, and regulatory compliance
• Working knowledge of medication management and controlled-substance requirements
• Sound judgment, professionalism, and strong communication skills

• Direct involvement in ASC accreditation surveys or renewals
• Experience working with consulting pharmacists or pharmacy compliance programs
• Familiarity with California-specific healthcare regulatory requirements
