Southern Highlands Community Mental Health CenterJob Posting: Peer Recovery Support Specialist (PRSS) – RAFT Grant(Reuniting Appalachian Families Today)Position Type: Full-TimeLocation: Various counties served by SHCMHCAbout the RAFT GrantThe Reuniting Appalachian Families Today (RAFT) program provides support to families impacted by substance use, legal involvement, and barriers to reunification. Through compassionate care, advocacy, and coordinated support services, RAFT helps individuals work toward stability, recovery, and rebuilding family connections.Position SummaryThe Peer Recovery Support Specialist (PRSS) uses their own lived experience with substance use recovery to provide hope, guidance, and mentorship to individuals involved with the RAFT program. PRSS staff help clients navigate the recovery process, access treatment and community resources, and stay motivated as they work toward reunification and long-term wellness.Key ResponsibilitiesProvide peer-based support, encouragement, and mentorship to individuals in recovery in the court system.Assist clients in identifying their strengths, goals, and recovery needs.Help clients connect with treatment programs, housing, employment, community services, and recovery supports.Share lived experience appropriately to empower and motivate clients.Support clients in navigating DHHR, court systems, and community partners as needed.Participate in treatment team meetings, case reviews, and RAFT program activities.Maintain required documentation and case notes in accordance with SHCMHC and grant standards.Model healthy recovery behaviors, boundaries, and professionalism.Maintain confidentiality and comply with all HIPAA and agency policies.QualificationsRequired:High school diploma or equivalent.Lived experience with substance use and sustained recovery (minimum 6 months–1 year preferred).Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.Ability to pass required background checks as permitted by the PRSS role.This position values lived experience and is not restricted from working with correctional settings.Strong communication skills, empathy, and a desire to help others succeed.West Virginia PRSS certification.Experience in peer support, case management, or recovery-oriented programs.Knowledge of local recovery communities, treatment options, and community resources.Key CompetenciesEmpathy and active listeningAbility to model recovery-oriented behaviorsReliability and strong boundariesProblem-solving and motivational skillsAbility to work within a team and independentlyComfort working with individuals facing legal involvement or crisis situationsWork Environment & RequirementsThis position involves office-based work, community outreach, travel to service areas, and occasional flexible hours to meet client needs.
