Physical Requirements

Working Conditions

Primarily Works in a well-lighted and air-conditioned environment with period of heavy workload and stress. This role may include working in less-than-ideal home conditions, which can include exposure to extreme temperatures and environments that may not meet typical cleanliness standards such as clutter, unkept surfaces, and homes with pets. Works in various conditions.

Responsibilities
Performance: Essential Functions

Resource Utilization: Consistently utilizes and maintains supplies and equipment to minimize lost charges and unnecessary equipment repair-replacement.

Confidentiality: Adheres to established policies on privacy and security requirements for compliance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), as applicable by Shannon Policy.

Basic Functions and Activities

Functional Knowledge of Automation
  • Connect RX Support, Acudose, MedCarousel, NarcStation, & PACMED: Demonstrates
  • Accurate knowledge and skill to carry out job duties and operate correctly.
  • Follows departmental work policies and procedures. Initiates appropriate maintenance requests when applicable. Uses proper barcoding procedures for restocking of medications into automation products. Utilizes electronic dispense preparation functions to minimize medication error. Appropriately documents cleaning, training, and unit inspections. Maintains Scanning Average of 90% or greater. Good speed and consistency of output along with good time utilization of job duties. Quality of work is demonstrated with little or no mistakes.

Inventory Control Activities
  • MedCarousel, Cycle Counts, Wholesaler order placement, checking in wholesaler order, unit dose preparations: Demonstrates accurate knowledge and skill to carry out job duties.
  • Maintains hospital medication inventory with speed and consistency of output. Rotates, returns and replenishes pharmacy stock to sustain appropriate par levels and minimize waste. Identifies damage/expired stock and promptly removes from inventory

Medication Delivery Activities
  • Delivers medications, sterile products, physician narcotic boxes, and supplies to patient care, clinic, and surgical areas: Demonstrates accurate knowledge and skill to carry out job duties. Consistently delivers medications in a timely manner with no need of prompting from colleagues and according to work flow chart.
  • Accurately, and consistently delivers medications, sterile products, narcotic boxes, and supplies to patient care, clinic, and surgical areas: Demonstrates knowledge and skill to carry out job duties in a timely manner with ability to identify and correct discrepancies without prompting from colleagues. Abides by polices regulating controlled substances.

Preparation of IV Sterile Products Using Laminar Flow Hood
  • Assists with IV preparation, responsible for triaging and organizing work flow (i.e. knows which IV preparations take precedence in emergency situations), keeping laminar flow hood clean and orderly during IV shift, documenting cleaning per procedure. Works efficiently and manages duties to ensure that tasks are completed with accuracy and within the scheduled shift or reasonable time. Restock supplies according to work flow

Preparation and Safe Handling of IV Sterile Products Using the Biological Safety Cabinet (BSC)
  • Assist with chemotherapy preparation methacholine preparations, and other products prepared in the BSC. Responsible for keeping NSC clean and orderly along with maintaining Chemotherapy room clean and orderly per cleaning procedures.
  • Demonstrates safe handling procedures to admix chemotherapy preparations, hazardous drug preparations, and other products prepared in the BSC. Understands and consistently utilizes safe handling practices according to current USP 800 guidelines and departmental policies and procedures. Responsible for maintaining chemotherapy IV room, BSC, and hazardous drug area. BSC and chemotherapy rooms are to be kept clean, orderly, and adequately stocked according to work flow.

Telephone Etiquette/Triage of Telephone Calls
  • Navigation through EPIC, navigation through physician orders, processing nursing requests; Demonstrates accurate knowledge and skill to carry out job duties.
  • Follow through with phone calls and sees task to completion.

Customer Focus
  • Personally demonstrates that external (or internal) customers are a high priority. Identifies customer needs and expectations and responds to them in a timely and effective manner. Anticipates and prevents delays or other things that can adversely affect the customer.
  • Keeps customers informed about the status of pending actions and inquires about customer satisfaction with products or services.

Qualifications

Education
  • Preferred
    • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent

Experience:
  • Preferred
    • One year as a Pharmacy Technician

Certification/Licensure:
  • Required
    • Cert Pharmacy Tech/CPT
    • Registered Pharmacy Tech
    • Valid Texas Driver's License
    • Sterile Compounding and Aseptic Technique (SCAT) Course completion by an ACPE accredited provider

Completion of on-the-job didactic & experimental training on sterile compounding processes & procedures at Shannon Inpatient Pharmacy
