JOB DESCRIPTION

The Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center (MEDVAMC) in Houston, Texas is seeking a dedicated, compassionate, and highly skilled Staff Physician to join our nationally recognized Spinal Cord Injury & Disorders (SCI/D) Service. The SCI/D Center in Houston is one of the largest and most comprehensive in the country, providing acute rehabilitation, medical/surgical management of chronic SCI, primary care for Veterans with spinal cord injuries, and lifelong interdisciplinary follow-up.

The ideal candidate has strong clinical skills in managing complex SCI patients, thrives in an interdisciplinary environment, and is committed to delivering high-quality, Veteran-centered care.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Provide comprehensive outpatient and/or inpatient care to Veterans with spinal cord injury and spinal cord disorders, including traumatic and non-traumatic etiologies.
  2. Provide primary care services for Veterans enrolled in the SCI/D Primary Care Model.
  3. Collaborate closely with an interdisciplinary team, including rehabilitation therapists, nurses, psychologists, social workers, urology, PM&R, neurology, surgery, and other specialties.
  4. Participate in the PM&R/SCI on-call schedule.
  5. Support the medical center’s mission of education by supervising residents, fellows, and medical students as assigned.
  6. Engage in quality improvement initiatives, performance measures, and evidence-based practice aligned with VA standards.
  7. Participate in multidisciplinary team rounds, family meetings, and care coordination activities.
  8. Opportunities available for involvement in clinical research, program development, and national SCI/D initiatives.


Required Qualifications:

  1. MD or DO degree from an accredited institution.
  2. Board certified or board eligible in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R), Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, or another relevant specialty.
  3. Eligible for full and unrestricted medical license in the United States.
  4. Eligible for appointment within the Veterans Health Administration.
  5. Strong clinical experience in managing spinal cord injury or willingness to develop expertise through VA-supported training.


The following qualifications are preferred but NOT required:

  1. Fellowship training or significant experience in Spinal Cord Injury Medicine.
  2. Board certification/eligibility in Spinal Cord Injury Medicine (SCIM).
  3. Experience working in interdisciplinary teams in inpatient rehabilitation or SCI centers.
  4. Prior VA experience


Work Schedule:

Full-time; typical schedule Monday-Friday, with participation in call rotation.
