A large manufacturing operation in Pennsylvania is seeking a Product Metallurgical Engineer to support customer quality requirements, product qualification, and metallurgical problem solving for rolled metal products. This role serves as a key technical interface between customers, sales, quality, and operations, with responsibility for ensuring products meet specifications while maximizing operational availability and cost effectiveness.

This is a safety-sensitive role with direct customer interaction and occasional travel.

Job Details

The Product Metallurgical Engineer is responsible for reviewing customer specifications, approving manufacturing practices, and resolving quality issues related to customer claims, nonconforming material, and product performance. The role balances customer requirements with manufacturing capability, drives corrective actions, and supports new product qualification and continuous improvement initiatives.

Key Responsibilities:
Customer Specifications and Product Availability
  • Review customer specifications and prepare formal acceptances or exceptions
  • Advise commercial and customer support teams on product availability and limitations
  • Support trial reviews and non-standard product evaluations
  • Develop and issue special practice requirements as needed
  • Initiate and support PPAP activities when required

Practice Approval and Change Management
  • Review, approve, or reject production practices based on customer requirements
  • Ensure practices meet quality expectations while optimizing yield and cost
  • Lead change control activities to manage risk to product quality and process stability

Quality Issue Resolution
  • Disposition internal nonconforming or questionable material
  • Investigate product issues with operations and quality teams to drive root cause resolution
  • Review and disposition customer claims and complaints
  • Coordinate corrective actions with quality systems, process engineering, and operations

Customer Support and Technical Interface
  • Serve as primary technical contact for assigned customer accounts
  • Travel to customer locations or host on-site visits to support claim resolution and product qualification
  • Support new product development and qualification efforts with customers

Process and Quality Management
  • Lead projects to improve product quality, yield, and process efficiency
  • Support identification and management of key processes tied to customer requirements
  • Monitor product characteristics for process capability
  • Act as process owner for assigned process-managed characteristics
  • Participate in activities supporting ISO and automotive quality system requirements

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Materials Science, or Chemical Engineering from an accredited institution
  • Authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Internship or early career experience in aluminum or metals manufacturing
  • Exposure to rolling mill operations or downstream finishing processes
  • Working knowledge of casting, rolling, and finishing technologies
  • Familiarity with aluminum alloys, tempers, and industry standards
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to work directly with customers
  • Ability to balance technical detail with commercial and operational considerations
