Position SummaryThe Property Maintenance Inspector participates in multiple activities that contribute to the livability of rental housing in the community including but not limited to complete routine proactive property maintenance inspections ensure compliance with all rental license requirements respond to resident complaints and complete outreach and educational activities with renters and rental property owners and managers which includes door knocking at rental properties as needed. Community engagement and relationship building with tenants rental property owners and managers neighbors community leaders and others are key components to this position. Pending proper education and certifications this position may be cross trained with other inspection staff within the department including building inspections code enforcement and public/environmental health to provide professional development opportunities and to meet the needs of the community.AMENDMENT 12/11/25: This job posting has been extended until Monday 12/22/25 at 11:59 p.m. or until a sufficient number of qualified applications are received as determined by Human Resources.Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesPerform routine general rental housing inspections to verify compliance with state codes and city ordinancesRespond to housing complaints regarding property maintenance zoning and nuisance code issuesEnsure rental housing complies with all rental licensing requirements including some property management requirements Prepare and distribute reports letters forms handouts; conduct research and prepare recommendations relating to enforcement actions for supervisors and court proceedings; may be required to testify in city court actionsAttend internal and external meetings with staff property managers and owners to discuss common compliance issues capital budgeting requirements and city expectations relating to rental inspections programMaintain inspection and other property data to ensure proper tracking of documentation and workflowConduct public education and outreach policy and ordinance review. Involves participating in public meetings with key stakeholders including Safe Rental Home training with rental landlords/property managers. Also includes door knocking in collaboration with other staffEducate property owners and residents on code requirements; assist in finding solutions to code violations; investigate property maintenance complaints and resolve code issues with the publicParticipate in professional organizations committees and boards for code development and city representationPerform other duties as assigned for division department and organizationMinimum and Desired QualificationsEducationAssociates degree in building inspection technologies environmental health or related areaANDExperienceOne (1) year of related experienceORThree (3) years of highly-related experience to the duties of the position or an equivalent combination of education and experience requiredLicensesCurrent and valid drivers licenseICC/AACEProperty Maintenance and Housing Inspector within one year of employmentEquivalencyAn equivalent combination of education and experience closely related to the duties of the position MAY be consideredKnowledge Skills and AbilitiesKnowledge of city codes and ordinances state statutes and federal regulations related to property maintenanceAbility to handle difficult situation and difficult customers in a tactful and professional mannerProficient in computer programs such as Microsoft Office Package and various databasesProven ability and demonstrated commitment to an inclusive workplace related to racial equity diversity and inclusion.
