Primary Location:2800 E. Spring Creek Parkway, Plano, Texas, 75074We are searching for candidates that meet the required qualifications and experience and are able to perform the essential duties and responsibilities.Job Summary:Provide clear and accurate interpreting/translating services for d/Deaf and Hard of Hearing students in all college-related activities, classes, programs, and events.Interpreter trainees will mentor with current full-time staff interpreters.Required Qualifications:Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesCertified Interpreters will interpret for d/Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals in classroom settings and at college-related activities.Utilize several modes of communication including ASL, Signed English, Contact Variety English Contact Variety ASL, and/or Oral methods.Follow the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf and the Texas Commission for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Code of Ethics.Discuss with the student their preferred/appropriate seating arrangements.Use the interpreter coordinator as a resource to help with problem-solving as necessary.Report schedule changes, appropriateness of skill level for a particular class, faculty cooperation, course content or style, and feedback about student's use of Interpreter to the Interpreter Coordinator.Adhere to the college and department policies and procedures.Perform Interpreter skill-building activities to continually improve/enhance current knowledge and skills related to interpreting.Attend and participate in annual in-service training sessions and workshops.Maintain confidentiality of student records in compliance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). Ensure student and class information is secured on a daily basis.Interpreter Trainee Essential Duties & Responsibilities:Mentor with a current staff interpreter to improve interpreting skills, ability, self-critique, analysis of work, and ability to accept and integrate feedback.Learn appropriate on-the-job ethics and behaviors required in the field of interpreting. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met. Positions in this class typically require talking, hearing, seeing, grasping, standing, walking and repetitive motions. Relatively free from unpleasant environmental conditions or hazards. Office environment. Little physical effort required. RequirementsCurrent Texas Department of Assistive and Rehabilitative Services (DARS), Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services (DHHS), Board for Evaluation of Interpreters (BEI) certification, or current national equivalent certification required.A minimum of two (2) years’ experience as an interpreter in a college, university setting, or Deaf Service Agency is desired but not required.Interpreter Trainee Requirements (Salary Grade 205HR):Minimum accumulative GPA of 3.0 in all Interpreting classesKnowledge of Deaf CultureAwareness of Interpreter Professional Code of ConductFluency in spoken EnglishInterpersonal skillsCustomer service skillsComputer and applicable software skillsLicenses and CertificationsPart-time interpreter salary grade/hourly rate is determined based on certification level completed at time of hire:INTERPRETER TRAINEE (Salary Grade 205HR) $20.00- Must be enrolled in or have completed an accredited Interpreter training programINTERPRETER I (Salary Grade 212HR) $32.00 - BEI Basic certification or equivalent. Equivalent certifications: BEI Level I, NICINTERPRETER II (Salary Grade 213HR) $33.50 - BEI Level II certification or equivalent. Equivalent certifications: CI, CT, IC, ITINTERPRETER III (Salary Grade 214HR) $38.50 - BEI Advanced certification or equivalent. Equivalent certifications: BEI Level III, NIC Advanced, CSC, IC/TC, CI/CT, RSC, CDIINTERPRETER IV (Salary Grade 215HR) $43.25- BEI Level IV certification or equivalent. Equivalent certifications: MCSC, SCLINTERPRETER V (Salary Grade 216HR) $46.00- BEI Master certification or equivalent. Equivalent certifications: BEI Level V, NIC MasterNOTE: Part-time Interpreters will receive a 10% pay differential for nights after 5 p.m. and weekends. **This position is Security Sensitive, therefore, candidates will be subject to a criminal background check.**The above description is an overview of the job.
