Provides clinical supervision of patient care and assures the consistent implementation of quality, patient safety and regulatory standards and requirements. Assigns staff to patients on a shift based on patient acuity level, skill and competency level of staff, the workload of staff, and patient volume. Assesses staff competencies, workload and skill requirements to make optimal patient care assignments and coordinates staffing for the current and next shift with departmental leaders. Functions as the unit patient flow coordinator, facilitating discharges, admissions and transfers. This includes assuming a direct patient assignment as needed to prevent patients holding in other departments. Expedites proactive and anticipatory triaging of patients to include active communication with House Supervisor/Bed Control/Admitting and transferring departments (including assuring timely computer entry of transaction by staff). Promotes positive working relationships within the unit and between departments and with all customers, recognizing that effective interaction with the interdisciplinary team is necessary for optimal patient care. Maintains clear communication with others regarding unit needs and or incidents. Initiates service recovery and immediate solutions as needed. Role models professional growth and development through participation in in-services and educational programs, and reviews current literature. Participates in ongoing shared-governance activities and provides leadership for the implementation of initiatives recommended by the councils, including performance improvement activities. Contributes to planning the unit budget and directs shift activity to assure compliance with budgetary guidelines (cost / unit of service or hours per patient day productivity standards). Role models RN direct care responsibilities, including planning, providing and documenting individual goal directed patient / family focused nursing care using evidence based practices. Practice autonomously, consistent with practice standards and research-based policies and procedures. Assures department commitment to Performance Improvements and leads by example Serves as a role model for service excellence and commits to “must haves” Utilizes resources efficiently and effectively Maintains safe environment Addresses patient population-specific needs Participates in Performance Improvement activities Implements National Patient Safety Goals Assigns breaks and meal times Adjusts staffing based on acuity levels and patient volume Responsible for ensuring that all necessary tools and equipment are requested. Other related job tasks or responsibilities as assigned Position Summary The Clinical Nurse Supervisor has direct responsibility of assigned department. The Clinical Nurse Supervisor assumes shift accountability for directing all activities related to clinical supervision, monitors and evaluates the staffing and scheduling needs of the department. Is responsible for the hiring, developing and evaluating of staff. Demonstrates the skills of clinical and technical competence and independently demonstrates effective critical thinking skills for problem solving and priority setting. Promotes an effective team environment and supports the mission, vision, values, and standards of service and quality care. Responsible for quality, safety, patient experience, employee engagement, and financial outcomes of the department. Exemplifies the principles of leadership practices. Promotes an excellent customer services environment and is a proactive liaison for physicians, employees, patients, families, and guests. Demonstrates effective communication skills, conflict management skills, human relationship competencies, team building and families/visitors relationships. Minimum Requirements: Special Skills: Effective interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to communicate effectively with all levels in the organization and with internal and external customers. Must be able to independently make decisions in high-stress situations. Demonstrates objectivity in decision making, utilizing facts to support decisions. Ability to anticipate and respond to problems and risks. Education: Nursing Degree from an accredited nursing school, Bachelor’s degree or a Bachelor's degree is obtained within two years. Experience: Five years relevant clinical nursing experience. Licensure/Certification: Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Arizona. CPR ER, ICU, Endoscopy, Tele, Cardiac Cath Lab, L&D: ACLS required or must obtain within six months of hire. ER: PALS required or must obtain within six months of hire. PACU: ACLS required or must obtain within six months of hire, PALS preferred. Post-partum, Nursery, L&D: NRP required or must obtain within six months of hire. Preferred Requirements: Education: BSN.
