This is NOT a sensitive position.Campus Security Authority:YesCampus Security Authority Statement:This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority. A Campus Security Authority (or CSA) is defined as an “official of the institution with significant responsibility for student and campus activities.” A CSA is required to immediately report any crime that is reported to them to the University Police who will then review, evaluate, and investigate the reported crime. Annual training is required by the Department of Education for all personnel who have been designated as a Campus Security Authority.Designated Personnel:YesDesignated Personnel Statement:This position is a “designated position” meaning this position could potentially be required to work (depending on the event) during an emergency closing.Statement of Economic Interest:NoStatement of Economic Interest Statement:This position does NOT require a Statement of Personal Economic Interest.Restricted Position:YesRestricted Position Statement:A restricted position would be subject to availability of funding.Chief Objective of Position:Christopher Newport University invites applications for multiple openings of Residential Fellow within the Office of Residence Life and Housing Administration.The Residential Fellow will support the Office of Residence Life and Housing Administration in its mission to provide on-campus housing that enhances the educational experience for every residential student at Christopher Newport University. Reporting to an Assistant Director for Residence Life, the Residential Fellow will provide ongoing support for all residential students, student staff, and professional staff. This position requires an on-call duty rotation including after hours, weekends, and university holidays/academic breaks. While serving on call, the Residential Fellow will need to remain within a 15-minute response time from campus with reliable transportation. Additional support may be needed during university holidays/academic breaks in case of emergency. This is a required live-in, 12-month position (June 1, 2026 to May 31, 2027). Upon mutual agreement, Residence Life may extend a contract for one additional year (until May 31, 2028).CNU was recognized by the Princeton Review in several areas:Best College Dorms (#4 nationally among public universities and #1 in Virginia)The Best 390 CollegesBest Mid-AtlanticCome be a part of the leadership of this award-winning team of professionals!Work Tasks:Staff Supervision and DevelopmentServe as the primary supervisor of their assigned community’s student staff: Resident Assistants (RAs), Front Desk Assistants (FDAs), and a Senior Resident Assistant (SRA).Assist in the planning and implementation of August and January Resident Assistant and Front Desk Assistant Training along with informal training throughout the year.Conduct weekly staff meetings for Resident Assistants and individual meetings on a regular basis.Conduct monthly staff meetings for Front Desk Assistants.Residential Experience and EngagementServe as the primary point of contact for day-to-day operational needs of a designated residential community.Plan and execute the Residential Community Connection Plan (residential curriculum) to foster an engaging and educational living and learning environment for staff and students.Support student staff members in the planning of programs and events for residential students.Advise a Hall Council in the areas of community development and advocacy.Conduct, Care, and Crisis ResponseAddress and mediate conflict involving roommates/suitemates, staff, and residential communities.Provide campus resources to students and make referrals to campus resources as appropriate.Conduct student care, support, and follow-up in a timely manner.Serve on an on-call rotation, providing support to residents and student staff members. On-call includes after hours, weekends, and university holidays/academic breaks.Serve as a hearing officer in collaboration with the Center for Honor Enrichment and Community Standards (CHECS), adjudicating cases involving lower-level violations.Partnerships and CollaborationAssist and provide support for University-wide programs to include Setting Sail (First-Year Orientation), Changing Tides (Transfer Student Orientation), Move-In, Welcome Week, Freshman Dessert Receptions, Pancake Breakfast, May Commencement Activities, admissions events, and other university events as requested.Promote the mission of Christopher Newport University and adhere to all departmental policies and procedures, and support additional University programs that enhance the overall experience for students, as approved by their supervisor. This may include, but is not limited to Signing Day, Senior Week, Commencement activities, and Admission events.Operations and AdministrationReport facilities-related concerns to Housing Operations and Facilities and assist with student support-and follow-up.Support departmental operations, including key management, occupancy management, resident check-in/out, and damage billing.Assist Residence Life and Housing Administration summer operations, including supervision of summer student staff members, provide support for the closing of upper-level occupancy spaces, and prepare for the fall move-in process.University DutiesThis position is designated as a “responsible employee” who has the authority to redress sexual violence, who has the duty to report incidents of sexual violence or other student misconduct, or who a student could reasonably believe has this authority or duty.Develop and maintain very positive and professional customer service and/or relations within the office/department and with all constituencies to include students, faculty, staff, guests, and employees.Demonstrate a positive and professional attitude and treat everyone with dignity and respect.Fully supports the “Student’s First” value at CNU and routinely goes the extra mile in providing service.Review and communicate safety issues to assure a safe and healthy workplace and a reduction in work related absence.Follow workplace safety regulations and adhere to applicable standards, processes, and programs established for your position.Immediately report unsafe work conditions and work-related incidents to your supervisor and participate in accident investigation requests.Performs other duties as assigned.Knowledge, Skills, Abilities (KSA's) related to position:Excellent interpersonal communication skillsOrganizational and time management skillsAbility to work both independently and on a teamProven critical thinking and problem-solving skillsAbility to handle and resolve conflictRequired Education:Must be a 2024, 2025, or 2026 graduate of Christopher Newport University.
