Job Description

General PurposeThe Seasonal Engineering Intern will assist Technical Services with data collection design mapping planning construction inspection and asset management. Seasonal Engineering Interns work 40 hours per week. Candidates for this internship have an interest in design construction and municipal government.Learning Outcomes:Use of industry softwareUnderstanding of transportation design standards and how they are applied in real-world projectsExperience in multimodal planning including pedestrian bicycle and roadway infrastructureExperience in data collection analysis and applicationParticipating in and understanding the role of transportation engineering in a public agencyGaining awareness of career pathways in the civil engineering industryUnion Affiliation:Non-UnionPay Grade:$19.15 HourlyRemote Tier 1: Zero (0) days remote/weekEssential Job FunctionsAssist with construction inspection and daily logs of workCreate maps and scaled drawings and design plans using AutoCAD and ArcGISCollect and process traffic dataPrepare asset inspection reports and analyze and input dataInventory and assess assets such as streets sidewalks bicycle facilities maps and filesCollect data in the field using GIS GPS surveying and public recordsCreate or manipulate GIS data and databasesResearch and write reports memos outreach materials and written correspondence related to Public Works projectsOrganize recordsAssist in preparing for and/or attending public meetingsComplete work independently and with regular communication to Public Works engineers and plannersPerform work in a Windows-based computer environmentNon-Essential Job Functions:Performs other duties as required.Qualifications/Basic Job RequirementsAbility to actively support City diversity equality and cultural competency efforts within stated job responsibilities and work effectively across diverse cultures and constituencies.Demonstrated commitment to diversity equality and inclusion as evidence by ongoing trainings and professional development.Associates degree or junior-level coursework in Engineering GIS Urban Planning Natural Resource Planning Geography related field or equivalent experience.Experience with engineering construction management drafting or similar field.Experience or coursework in ArcGIS.Experience or coursework using AutoCAD.Experience or coursework in the collection of new data using professional mapping grade GPS preferred.Ability to work independently efficiently effectively and cooperatively.Ability to read and interpret blueprints and specifications.Ability to communicate professionally and diplomatically.Ability to follow written and oral instructions.Ability to organize work and set priorities to meet deadlines.Ability to record and maintain information for future access.Input access and analyze data using a computer.Ability to provide customer service to the public and City staff.Must be able to handle various projects at the same time work effectively under pressure and keep schedules on track.Ability to work with a diverse population with a strong commitment to equity and inclusion among City staff and the general public.Additional InformationPromoting a culture that reveres diversity and equityThe City of Burlington is proud to be an equal opportunity employer and we are strongly committed to creating a dynamic and equitable work-force that mirrors the population and world that we serve.
