Starting pay rate: $70,000 - $78,000 annuallyBenefits start 1st of the month following 30 days of employment
About the Role
The Senior Staff Accountant is a key individual contributor supporting the organization's financial integrity, compliance, and reporting. This role focuses on accurate execution, analysis, and support, not departmental management.
The Senior Staff Accountant works closely with the Controller to ensure clean close cycles, reliable financial reporting, and compliance with grant and nonprofit requirements-while maintaining sustainable expectations and work life balance.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Reporting & General Ledger
- Prepare and review journal entries and general ledger activity
- Perform and review bank, credit card, and balance sheet reconciliations
- Assist in the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements under Controller review.
Grant & Fund Accounting Support
- Support grant, restricted fund, and donor contribution tracking
- Prepare grant expenditure schedules and compliance support documentation
- Assist program leaders with understanding budgets and spending timelines
Audit & Compliance Support
- Prepare audit schedules and respond to auditor requests in collaboration with the Controller
- Support compliance with GAAP and nonprofit reporting requirements
- Help maintain internal controls and documentation standards
Operational & Team Support
- Provide guidance and technical support to Staff Accountants as needed
- Participate in accounting process improvements and system enhancements
- Partner with finance leadership on analysis and reporting requests
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
- 2-4+ years of accounting experience; nonprofit or fund accounting experience preferred
- Strong reconciliations, month end close, and financial reporting skills
- Proficiency in accounting software and advanced Excel
Preferred
- Experience supporting audits and external reporting
- CPA or CPA candidate status (preferred, not required)
Role Clarity
- This is an individual contributor role, not a management position
- Final accountability for financial statements, audits, and strategy remains with the CFO.
