DescriptionJOB SUMMARY:A shipfitter with approximately 4 or more years of experience laying out positioning aligning and fitting parts of structural metal products with the use of regular supervision and while always adhering to industry safety standards.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:1. Positions aligns fits and welds parts to form complete units or subunits following blueprints and layout specifications and using jigs welding torches and hand tools2. Verifies conformance of work-pieces to specifications using squares rulers and measuring tapes3. Tack-welds fitted parts together4. Lays out and examines metal stock or work-pieces to be processed to ensure that specifications are met5. Aligns and fits parts according to specifications using jacks turnbuckles wedges drift pins pry bars and hammers6. Locates and marks work-piece bending and cutting lines allowing for stock thickness machine and welding shrinkage and other component specifications7. Positions or tightens braces jacks clamps ropes or bolt straps or bolt parts in position for welding or riveting8. Studies engineering drawings and blueprints to determine materials requirements and task sequences9. Moves parts into position manually or with hoists or cranes10. Sets up and operates fabricating machines such as brakes rolls shears flame cutters grinders and drill presses to bend cut form punch drill or otherwise form and assemble metal components11. Performs other duties as assignedKNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:1. Measures templates cuts grinds components for foundations and other structural members2. Efficient use of material to prevent waste3. Advanced use of cutting equipment (Plasma Cutter and Oxy/Fuel Torch)4. Advanced reading interpreting of blueprints (successful identification of material types parts references applicable views/details)5. Advanced use of temporary attachments6. Advanced understanding of weld joint design (full and partial penetration welds chamfers and bevels)7. Advanced skill in installation and removal of fasteners and rivets8. Correctly identifies base material types and thicknesses9. Advanced level tack welder in common shipboard positions (overhead vertical horizontal)10. Intermediate tack welding in uncommon/ limited access positions (mirror confined heavy interferences)11. Expert to Advanced understanding of fitting operations (coping straightening carbon arcing)12. Advanced knowledge of Erect and Set principles (identification/use of extra material set to lines etc.)13. Advanced understanding of material fabrication14. Recognizes tooling needs (Which tool to use for which application)15. Able to solve job issues without need for Supervisory approval16. Ability to read fit up/alignments measuring devices (rulers/tape levels bobs squares etc.)17. Advanced use of power tools (grinders reciprocating saws drills etc.)18. Advanced use of hand tools (hammers punches clamps etc.)19. Correct set up of tools prior to use (running lines drop tests etc.)20. Knowledge of power tool safety (correctly identifying kick direction and pinch points)21. Advanced use of positioning equipment (dogs/wedges rams saddles)22. Advanced knowledge of shipbuilding standards (009-12 W1689)23. Advanced knowledge of inspection standards (00)24. Adheres to fire safety principles (hot work tickets positioning firewatches 35 rule etc.)25. Ability to instruct others to navigate onboard vessels to find work areas/backsides of work areas26. Advanced knowledge of industry safety standards/training27. Adheres to industry safety standards28. Requires occasional supervision to accomplish work RequirementsQUALIFICATIONS:1. High school diploma or GED and 4 or more years of related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience2. Ability to gain access to military installations3. Must be able to pass drug test and background checkPHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:1. Ability to lift 50 pounds regularly and seek help with weights over 50 pounds2. Ability to sit and/or stand for long periods of timeWhile performing the duties of this job the employee is required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger handle or feel objects tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs/vertical ladders; balance; stoop kneel crouch or crawl; talk or hear; taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision distance vision color vision peripheral vision depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.This is a physically demanding position and may accommodate some physical disabilities. Physical dexterity may be required when performing walk thru and inspection of job the performance of the walk thru you will be required to transverse steep stairwells vertical ladders and bending or stooping thru tight spaces. There may be occasional lifting of materials weighing not more than 50 pounds.ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:This position works on the jobsite. There is exposure to hostile environments loud noises hazardous chemicals/fumes and airborne particles smoke extreme temperatures moving mechanical parts: high precarious places.During work-site visits will be required to wear appropriate PPE including but not limited to:Hard HatEar Plugs or AttenuatorSafety ShoesDust Mask or RespiratorGlovesCRITERIA FOR ADVANCEMENT:1.
