GROUP: CertificatedSALARY:Certificated Salary ScheduleFLSA STATUS:ExemptWORKDAYS PER FISCAL YEAR:180 SUMMARY: The Special Education Teacher position provides special education services to students with disabilities in the least restrictive environment which may be inclusion within the regular classroom or pull-out in the resource room.ABOUT CHIEF LESCHI SCHOOLS:Formerly known as the Puyallup Tribal School Chief Leschi Schools was founded in 1976 to address the high dropout rate of the youth of the Puyallup tribe. It is the largest of seven tribal schools in the state of Washington and one of approximately 200 tribal schools in the United States. It is also one of the largest tribal schools to be funded by the Bureau of Indian Education.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESinclude the following:Communicates clearly both orally and in writingProvide Direct Instruction and assessment to students with disabilities in accordance with Individual Education PlansProvide case management services to ensure compliance with procedural requirements for IEPs.Position will provide Transition services for high school students as necessary.Provide consultation service to the regular classroom teachers as it relates to special education in inclusive settings.Provide technical assistance to staff students and parents regarding the special education process including parent and student rights referral evaluation and implementation of special education services.Function as an effective member of the Multi-Disciplinary TeamDesign and implement Student Individual Education Plans (IEP) with an emphasis on behavior and counseling goals and objectives.Maintain Special Education records and files for children with disabilitiesWorks effectively with para-educators and other staff membersPerforms other duties as assigned by administratorThis list is meant to be representative not exhaustive. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSBachelors DegreeValid Washington State Teaching Certificate with Special Education EndorsementSuccessful teaching experienceEDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:Valid Washington State Teaching Certificate with Special Education EndorsementSuccessful teaching and/or student-teaching experiences in Special Education classesPREFERRED QUALIFICATIONSTwo year teaching experience working as a full time employee in Special EducationExperience in teaching diverse student populations especially Native American Special Education studentsSuccessful experience working with special education and general education students in alternative and inclusive settings e.g. service learning and experiential educationCONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT:Successful criminal background clearanceSuccessful and/or clear drug screeningKNOWLEDGE OF:Best practices in teaching and learningSchool board policies and proceduresABILITY TO:Take initiative and work independentlyDemonstrate commitment to the teaching profession and its code of ethicsCommunicate effectively both verbally and in writingManage a classroom effectively for optimum learningSynthesize information and present it clearly and in an organized mannerWork with and relate to Native American children and serve as a positive role modelEstablish and maintain effective working relationships in a diverse multicultural environment to include school staff and administrators parents and community membersDemonstrate and maintain confidentialityIntegrate cultural competencies in teaching Native American studentsComply with school board policies and follow administrative proceduresREPORTING RELATIONSHIP:Building Administrator or designeePHYSICAL DEMANDS:The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
