JOB DESCRIPTION

Specimen Processing Technician

Location: Irving, TX 75063

Duration: 04 Month Contract (Possibility of extension or conversion)

Shift: Monday – Friday 11 pm-7:30 am CST

Pay Rate: $19-$23/hour (W2) (Based on experience and education)


Job Summary


Position Summary

The Specimen Processing Technician performs general support functions within the Specimen Processing Department in a high-volume production environment. This role requires strong data entry skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work efficiently while maintaining high-quality and accuracy standards.

The SPT I is critical to ensuring customer satisfaction by processing specimens accurately, safely, and in compliance with regulatory requirements. This position demands flexibility, organization, and the ability to adapt to daily changes in workflow and compliance regulations.


Key Responsibilities

  • Perform specimen processing functions, including:
  • A-Station operations
  • Pre-sorting
  • Pickup and delivery of processed specimens to laboratory areas
  • Imaging/microfilming
  • Centrifugation
  • Aliquoting
  • Accurately enter data at a minimum of 6,000 alphanumeric keystrokes per hour
  • Learn and understand specimen types related to client-ordered tests
  • Maintain compliance with test-ordering regulations (which may change frequently)
  • Meet productivity, quality standards, and departmental turnaround times
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area
  • Follow all safety, biohazard, and compliance policies and procedures
  • Communicate effectively with all levels of staff
  • Demonstrate flexibility in handling changing priorities and customer demands
  • Work in a fast-paced, repetitive production environment


Work Environment & Physical Requirements

  • Production-based, high-volume laboratory environment
  • Exposure to biohazard materials
  • Required use of PPE (lab coat, gloves, mask, goggles, protective wear when applicable)
  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods
  • Ability to perform repetitive tasks for long durations
  • Heavy workload environment requiring sustained focus and productivity


Required Qualifications


Education

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent


Skills & Competencies

  • Strong data entry skills (minimum 6,000 keystrokes/hour)
  • Excellent understanding of the English language (written and spoken)
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to adapt quickly to change
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to follow detailed procedures and regulatory requirements
  • Must be punctual and dependable


Transportation

  • Must have reliable personal transportation and a valid Driver’s License
  • (Public transportation, rideshare, Uber, etc. are not considered reliable transportation.)


Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous laboratory or hospital laboratory experience
  • Knowledge of medical terminology applicable to a clinical laboratory
  • Experience in a production or high-volume environment
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) strongly preferred


Attendance & Performance Expectations

  • Must be available to work scheduled shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime
  • Must report to work on time and remain for the full shift
  • Excessive absenteeism or tardiness will result in termination
  • Must consistently meet productivity and quality standards
