The position will remain open to support hiring needs as they arise across the school districtTitle: SPED Cab MonitorReports to:Monitor Yard ManagerJob Overview: SPED Cab Monitors are assigned to monitor and assist students with special needs while they are being transported to and from school.Responsibilities:The Bus Monitors are responsible for implementing approved behavioral management strategies to ensure safe transportation of students to and from school.A special education cab monitor is responsible for being at work on time every day establishing positive relationships with students and parents.Assisting parents and school-based staff with safe loading and unloading of students; coordinate seating of students on the busCommunicating with paras teachers school leaders and parents concerning relevant student background medical considerations and behavior plans as appropriatePartnering with the bus driver to ensure that the correct students board the bus and are dropped off at the correct stopsEnsuring students seat belts and Child Restraint Systems are secured while riding the bus; assisting the bus driver with operating wheelchair clampsDemonstrate ability to prevent intervene or de-escalate disruptive or dangerous student behaviorReport all incidents/accidents and complete required reports as needed in writingAttend general and need-specific training courses as directedCapable of assessing situations in emergencies and quickly reacting with necessary measures for the protection and well-being of all students.Ability to follow written and verbal instructionsKnowledge:Basic knowledge of school bus safetyAbility to:Ability to operate a wide variety of safety equipment and adaptive equipment on buses including wheelchairs wheelchair lifts Child Safety Restraint Systems and other safety equipment in a safe and effective mannerMove a wheelchair on and off the bus as neededQualifications - Required:Must be 18 years of age or olderHigh School Diploma or GEDAbility to enter/exit bus via steps repeatedlyAbility to lift 25-49 lbsProficiencyinEnglishQualifications - Preferred:Previous experience working in a school setting and or with school aged children is preferredCPR/First Aid CertifiedTERMS: The Boston Public Schools in accordance with its nondiscrimination policies does not discriminate on the basis of race color age criminal record physical or mental disability pregnancy or pregnancy-related conditions homelessness sex/gender gender identity religion national origin ancestry sexual orientation genetics natural or protective hairstyle military status immigration status English language proficiency or any other factor prohibited by law in its programs and activities.
