RADIATION SAFETY OFFICER WEST VALLEY, NY Fusco Personnel is seeking an experienced Project Manager / Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) to lead and implement radiation protection programs across multiple areas of the site, including a closed radioactive waste disposal facility and an expansive tract of land with low-level environmental contamination. This position is a key contributor in ensuring that all work is conducted safely, responsibly, and in alignment with state and federal requirements. You will manage projects, oversee contractor work, review technical documents, and ensure that activities protect workers, the public, and the environment while advancing the organization’s mission. Duties & Responsibilities Implement and oversee radiation protection programs for:A closed, legacy waste disposal area operating under a state radioactive materials license. A large, largely undeveloped area with low-level environmental contamination under a federal license. Conduct radiation safety hazard evaluations, considering environmental conditions, historical site knowledge, and technical data to determine appropriate controls (e.g., PPE, dosimetry, bioassays, respiratory protection, engineering and administrative measures). Perform independent health physics calculations to identify monitoring and protection needs. Coordinate and supervise contractors performing radiological work. Apply consistent, respectful, and inclusive practices in all interactions. Minimum Qualifications At least 5 years of experience as a Project Manager, RSO, or related role. Bachelor’s degree plus formal training in radiation protection or radiation safety. Strong technical writing skills. Minimum of one year of project management experience. Ability to work outdoors, including on uneven terrain and in varying weather conditions. Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities. Solid understanding of regulatory, safety, and security requirements applicable to radiological sites. Preferred Qualifications Master’s degree plus formal training in radiation safety. Four years of experience as a Project Manager/RSO or similar role. Background in chemistry or familiarity with hazardous waste regulations (e.g., RCRA). Additional Considerations Experience at large radiologically contaminated sites is a plus. Prior work at a contaminated disposal area or similar environment is beneficial. Previous experience as a Radiological Control Technician (RCT) is desirable.
